Are they going to have to send in the troops in Alabama?

The State of Alabama just refuses to comply with federal court rulings on same-sex marriage. The Alabama Supreme Court has ordered its probate judges to stop issuing same-sex marriage licenses, despite a federal judge's ruling to the contrary, and a Supreme Court decision not to stay or take up the state's appeal. At what point can a state just say no and defy the feds without consequence?

This is a serious issue as more and more Red States and their extremely right wing Republican leaders get bolder and bolder in defying the federal government.

  • Right Barney, and as we have seen here in TX, the extreme right has an outsized influence in GOP primaries. Since Republican candidates here in TX are much more worried about being defeated in their primary than in the general election (Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick didn't even campaign in the general election), the end result is that they play to the hard-core minority of ultraconservative GOP primary voters and blow off the other 75 percent of voters. TX politicians are in a constant race to see who can get further to the right, and that is increasingly being reflected in public policy. This won't change until voters begin to punish hard right Republicans. I hate to say this, but here in TX, it may be time to start voting in the GOP primary. (Voters in TX can vote in the primary of their choice.)

Anyway, thanks to people like the Kochs, who are now putting big money into GOP primaries as well, funding conservative challengers to moderate Republicans, this same pressure is increasingly at play across the nation, and not just in heavily GOP states. The result is a far more right wing GOP, which isn't good for anybody.

  • This is what happens when we fail to get out and vote and the GOP wins control of several state legislatures and governorships. In 2010 the GOP launched a plan to take control of several states and won most of them including several governorships and will continue to control them until at least 2020. We need to wake up and see what is going on and get out and vote. We worry that the Koch's and others are throwing all these millions and millions into national elections but the real issue is the amount of money they are using to win local elections. Let's not forget that only about 30% of eligible voters voted in 2014.
