Texas AG tries to void special-case marriage

OK, a judge in Texas granted a special marriage license to a 30-year lesbian couple, one of whom is dying of ovarian cancer.

Well, our new Republican attorney general, not wanting to miss the chance to grandstand for the state's right wing nuts, immediately filed with the Texas Supreme Court wanting it to invalidate the marriage.

So, I wrote the following to the attorney general's office. Trying to communicate with the GOP leadership in this state is like beating your head against the wall, but I'm trying to at least raise awareness of the silliness that the Republican Party has become.

Here's my letter to the AG:

I would like to strongly protest Mr. Paxton's decision to seek the annulment of the marriage between the two women in Austin, one of whom is suffering from cancer.

Have you no heart?

Texas' amendment barring same-sex marriage is going to be overturned soon, if not by the 5th Circuit, by the U.S. Supreme Court.

Just leave these two women alone and quit wasting taxpayers' money and the Texas Supreme Court's time.

This is, frankly, a disheartening start to your tenure as Attorney General. I am tired of the state's Republican Party leaders only representing a small portion of Texans -- the right wingers who vote in GOP primaries -- and failing to represent the other 75 percent of Texans. You are our Attorney General, too!

A story on gay marriage in Alabama quoted a judge there as saying, and I paraphrase, This is the happiest day in these people's lives. Anyone who can't be happy for other people -- I'm sorry.

I think it applies in this case. Their marriage is doing no harm to the state. Leave them alone, at least until the court rulings are in. If by some miracle, the Texas amendment is upheld, get their marriage annulled then. No need to do it now.

It makes you and the state look petty and mean.

  • Unfortunately, the Republicans who rule this state (and yes, I say rule instead of govern) are going to continue to pander to the extreme right at the expense of everyone else until voters here actually decide to punish them for it. Alas, there is to this point no reason to think that is going to happen in the foreseeable future. Things are so bad here that Dan Patrick, the hard-core right wing new Lieutenant Governor, did not even bother to campaign in the general election for the state's No. 2 post, and still won in a walk. It's truly discouraging how totally unaware the vast majority of Texas voters are!!!

  • "It makes you and the state look petty and mean." I could not agree more. People against same-sex marriage can only be looking at it in the abstract and are missing the human side of the story. What resonated for me from the article is this: "Bryant said Thursday that being legally married to Goodfriend, who has ovarian cancer, would ensure inheritance and allow the couple to make medical decisions for each other should one of them become critically ill." If your significant other has serious health issues, and you don't have everything aligned legally, it can be a real nightmare when it's time to make medical decisions for your partner (and that's just the beginning of things that can be a royal pain in the ass). Putting everything together legally, for some, can be cost prohibitive, and it's amazing that what cost thousands in legal fees the equivalent can be bought with a $45 marriage license.

Conservatives always preach self-responsibility and the strength of family, and when one couple--together for 30 years--wants to take responsibility and minimize their liabilities, marriage, since they are gay, is not acceptable. The hypocrisy makes me grind my teeth.

Good on your for writing the letter Bear.
