This story from the Chicago Tribune offers some interesting food for thought. It seems that a number of the nation's "gayborhoods" are in decline. The story focuses on Laguna Beach, but also mentions the Castro and West Hollywood. Housing costs are undoubtedly part of this, but the acceptance of gay people by the larger public is considered a bigger reason. Many of us no longer need the protection and community of a gay neighborhood. This isn't entirely a bad thing and in some ways shows a maturing of the gay community. We can feel safe and become part of communities that aren't exactly like us.
I don't see "gayborhoods" vanishing altogether though. I think some people will always want to be close to the action and culture of gay life.
I don't think the "gay community" will just be assimilated to the point of vanishing. We may be able to blend in better, but we are still different and proud of that difference.
Do you guys see declining "gayborhoods" where you live?
