How many presidential candidates can you name?

OK, without looking on Wikipedia, how many do you think you can name? Or have even heard of?

I came up with 21 of 22, but then I'm in the news business and get exposed to this crap on a daily basis :)

Hint 1: There are 5 candidates for the Democratic nomination. And who isn't running for the GOP nod might not be a much longer list. There are 14 GOP hopefuls declared and another three expected in the next month.

The big early controversy on the GOP side is that because there are so many candidates running, only the top 10 in the national polls will be allowed in the first debate coming up on Fox News (of course). A number of the GOP candidates are wanting to bar Donald Trump from the proceedings on the grounds that he would embarrass the party, but that's bound to happen regardless. :) Wouldn't it be unfair to change the rules at the eleventh hour? And besides, if anybody actually watches this, it would likely be *because* of The Donald.

Hint 2: If this helps, the states of the candidates:

Dems:
Vermont
Rhode Island
New York
Maryland
Virginia

Republicans:
Declared
New York (2)
New Jersey
Pennsylvania
South Carolina
Georgia
Florida (2)
Louisiana
Arkansas
Kentucky
Texas (2)
California

Expected to run
Ohio
Wisconsin
Virginia

  • Impressive, fur. The one I didn't come up with was the GOPer from Virginia. The GOP field will likely narrow very rapidly with some dropping out even before Iowa. Hate to say it because he is such an uninspiring choice, but I am actually beginning to think the GOP may have the nerve to serve up another Bush. Is that REALLY the best they can come up with? I mean, is anyone nostalgic for the "great" Bush era? He's the most status quo of all the candidates, including Hill.

And I agree with you on the money. We can thank the Supremes and Citizens United for that.

And Fenway, that could be a GOP debate photo :)

  • Weirdly--or is it pathetic?--I can name them all. Friday night, watching Gwen Ifill, after a report about the stunning amount of money that the Bush campaign had raised since his official announcement, Gwen asked, "are people not scared about jumping into the race with these monetary frontrunners?". I can't remember the reporter's name, but she responded that "no, the candidates only need to find someone to write them a check for what would be half the cost of a yacht". None of the candidates are inspiring, and it's such a bummer that a candidate with an extreme stance, so vastly removed from the mainstream, can remain a viable candidate from the largess of a single benefactor. It's going to be a long campaign, and the amount of money spent by and on these candidates is obscene. :(
