State Supreme Court chief justice bars same-sex marriage in Alabama

You read that headline right. This isn't a couple of years ago. This happened Wednesday, Jan. 6, 2016, in the state of Alabama. Roy Moore, the bozo of a judge who did this via administrative ruling, has proved time and time again that he wouldn't know the law if it slapped him in the face. How this fool manages to avoid impeachment, even in a backwoods state like Alabama, is beyond me.

Moore's logic this time is that the Supreme Court ruling applies only to the states directly involved in the case -- Kentucky, Tennessee, Michigan and Ohio. While he's right in a very narrow sense, I think if you asked 50 state attorneys general, probably all 50 would agree that the ruling applies in their state. Moore knows better. He's just making headlines and trouble. Who knows? Maybe he's angling for a spot on the Republican ticket :)

But in the meantime, Moore's nonsense has very real consequences. Gay people in the state of Alabama are unable to marry. This is a serious hardship, a denial of a basic right of citizenship, and this needs to be quashed IMMEDIATELY.

The federal courts need to intervene and stop this nonsense ASAP. If Alabama won't comply, President Obama should consider sending in the National Guard. Don't laugh. If you recall, the feds had to do this in order to integrate public schools and universities in some Southern states in the 1950s and 1960s. The same-sex marriage ruling is every bit as important. A state simply cannot be allowed to illegally deny a basic right of citizenship to a minority group of its residents. And I realize gay people are not an ethnic minority, but we are a very real minority group just the same. This kind of crap cannot be tolerated in a nation that believes in the rule of law.

As for the religious rights argument ... It's fine for you to believe whatever you want in the name of religion, a bigoted mind, whatever. But your right to believe what you want does not include being able to deny me my rights as afforded by the Constitution of the United States of America. Moore and other religious bigots don't get this basic understanding of constitutional law.

  • the State of Alabama Judge is in violation of Federal Law as determined by the U.S Supreme Court. State Judge has no authority to over-rule the U.S Supreme s. At best, the Judge is delusional to think that he can. I am sure there are follow up issues to be addressed by the authorities involved. e.g. law suits etc.

  • Barney, the right wing in the U.S. has lost their minds. They have become so extremist that they can't see the lunacy of their ways. I've actually seen a number of comparisons of Obama with Hitler because he dared to make a *minor* change in U.S. policy on gun background checks. Get a grip, people. No major American politicians can legitimately be compared to Hitler!!!

  • Well, obviously the National Guard would be a very last resort. Hopefully Alabama will comply with federal court or eventually Supreme Court orders. But if they don't and a gay couple wants to marry, then why not send in law enforcement to force the issue? Alabama cannot indefinitely be allowed to refuse to comply with a Supreme Court ruling.

  • This is the same judge who fought to keep a monument of the 10 Commandments on the courthouse lawn. There will be no federal troops however. This president is smart enough to realize that would just exacerbate the situation and turn him into a folk hero.

  • We have this going on in Alabama and a bunch of old white guys with guns hijacking a federal building in Oregon. Can you imagine if "black Lives Matters" took over a building armed to the teeth and demanded the federal government to do what they wanted?

  • BTW, at least one Alabama county doesn't plan to follow Moore's advisory. This from AP:

Montgomery County Probate Judge Steven Reed, one of the first probate judges to issue same-sex marriage licenses in the state, on Wednesday tweeted this statement:

"Judge Moore's latest charade is just sad & pathetic. My office will ignore him & this."
