Liberty Counsel behind rash of "Bathroom" bills

Meet the new face of hate in America. It's the Liberty Counsel, the conservative legal group that has become a thorn in the side of progressive America. It's my belief that lawyers who work for the LC should be disbarred for misrepresenting their clients, such as Kentucky County Clerk Kim Davis, and for working against the Constitution. I really think this should be the next line of attack against this legal hate group.

  • Don't be fooled. These folks' bills are not about "religious freedom." They are viciously homophobic and immediately head to court when any government entity passes anything that can be perceived to be pro-gay. These same types are also writing laws in Africa and Russia that include incredibly draconian punishments for gay people, up to and even including death. I really think Liberty University's law school should lose its accreditation and any lawyers it has produced who promote such unconstitutional laws be disbarred.

BTW, fur, liked the NYT piece. The GOP in the South and here in Texas is really just maintaining the old "Plantation" mentality. Virtually everything state government does here is designed to prop up wealthy interests at the expense of everyone else. They promote social causes in order to keep the right-wing vote in line. And since the Democratic Party isn't even competitive here, GOP lawmakers just play to their base and don't even care about the other 80 percent of the population. It's frustrating and pathetic. I actually wrote Rick Perry once opposing an anti-gay law and he told me if I didn't like it, I should feel free to move to a more pro-gay state!!!

Texas Republicans are truly evil people, and it is why I am so dead set against Ted Cruz even getting anywhere near the White House. Donald Trump is a far, far, far better option, and that is really saying something.

  • @art4u- You'd think it's a joke, but it's not. It's a movement, not a populace movement, but a powerful, moneyed, and conservative movement that's represents a vocal minority of the population. The one thing in common in these states that attempt to deny legal rights to the LGBT community is that the state government--both legislature and governor-- is controlled by Republicans. It's a weird paradox, for example, North Carolina the majority of its citizens do not agree with the legislation. The same could be said of other states too where similar legislation has been enacted. The article stated that the Liberty Counsel has affiliated attorneys in all 50 states to help draft legislation for conservative lawmakers. But in California, and many other states, there's zero chance of the legislation making it to the legislative floor. You ask, 'why don't they elect new state legislators?' --it's a long story, but the conservatives are well entrenched at the state levels--and will be for many more years--and the LGBT community will be fighting this kind of legislation for years to come.

Timothy Egan, from the NY Times, penned a fantastic article about this last week. He demonstrates the current and differing approaches of the conservative and progressive movements here in the US. • These people think there is a trans gender person lurking in every public bathroom in the country.

I think maybe it is all about the money. How much they can raise. How many lawsuits they can get involved in.

Isn't Liberty Counsel incorporated as a 'charity'? So, all the money they raise is tax free.

The radicals need a scapegoat to campaign against and to raise money against.

  • " Lawmakers in state after state..."

For someone not living in the usa - is this just the campaign of a few loud orthodox people or is this a real movement to segregate non-believers from orthodox?

I must admit, I first thought it was a 1st of april hoax. But it is not ?

  • Yep, these are just the tip in all the lawsuits coming. Listening to the Republican debates and you heard Cruz, Rubio, Carson, and Huckabee all parrot the 'religious liberty' line (I never saw Santorum on the little kids stage, but I'm sure he parroted it, too). There's a total industry built around trying to convince people that they are somehow being oppressed by LGBT equality.

All the more reason for getting a Democratic elected president and securing that ninth spot on the SC.

I agree rj, except 'creeps' I think they are assholes. Pox on the lot.

  • The whole bathroom argument is a straw horse for discrimination. Allegedly it is meant to prevent sexual predators from preying on women, but c'mon, if a predator wants to attack women in a public restroom by wearing a dress, a law is not going to stop him. And I seriously doubt there has ever been an instance where a transgendered person sexually assaulted a woman in the restroom. The Liberty Counsel is a menace, and its lawyers are in violation of their own legal oath.

  • These creeps ultimately want to intimidate transitioning people away from fulfilling their goal to arrive at the sexual identity they need to feel like a complete human being. They do not empathize with transitioning folks and want to force everyone to abide by their particular religious rules.

For example, they want to force a transitioning (male to female) person, with female homones coursing through her veins, breasts nicely developed, no facial hair, and wearing a dress and makeup, and carrying a purse, etc. to use the men's bathroom? All to satisfy their religious beliefs? And how are the "bathroom police" going to determine which sex a given person was born with so they can direct each person to the "proper" restroom?
