Gymbots

OK, I have the occasional misfortune of living near a major (narcissistic) gay mecca, Dallas. And I've come to the conclusion that I don't care if I ever see another set of bulging biceps, washboard abs, six packs, eight packs or whatever packs.

This is just the latest form of gay drag, people. If a guy is so self-obsessed that he can't accept anything less than the vision of perfection of the moment, I don't have a use for him. And if he has the time and tunnel vision to work out hours a day, six days a week, he really needs to get a life!!!

Now, don't get me wrong. Obviously exercise is good for your health and looks. I quit smoking and got too heavy and need to lose some weight myself. But too many in the gay community have taken it to the point that it's almost an exercise disorder.

Please, leave the perfect bodies to the models and porn stars. If everyone looked like that, then we'd just keep raising the bar on perfection.

  • I knew a guy in high school that was a guy-next-door Adonis type even without going to the gym or anything and I used to drool all over myself when I got to see him. He ended up getting into wrestling and the usual pumped-up body that went along with the industry and that just ended the fantasy for me. I don't mind a guy with a little padding or a guy that is in good shape but, when a guy can't scratch his left shoulder with his left hand because his bicep and tricep get in the way is just way too over-blown for me. Give me a handsome average Joe anytime!

  • Unfortunately, I have to agree with Cub4 on this one. Maybe it's the perspective of people from outside the city, but everyone I know who is not a Dallas resident agrees. I don't know what is wrong with the culture in Dallas that it promotes such a snobby attitude and such an impossibly high standard of perfection. Do guys in Dallas *ever* hook up with anybody, since nobody can possibly be good enough?

Austin may be the most "non-Texan" city in terms of having a more liberal attitude, but it's not the only place in Texas that is decent. Big D is really the only city in the state that is afflicted with the attitude issue on a large scale.

  • You might want to try Fort Worth instead :)

There are good people and good places in Dallas, of course, but the Dallas gay community is also infamous for its attitude.

  • Well.. Everyone has his/her own fantasies, view of beauty or self image they want to live up to. Whether it is influenced by some external third party image or their own vision of ideal shape is immaterial. I think it's an entirely personal issue. Yes, many gym rats are narcissistic. Some are obsessed with body image.

Then again, some others are obsessed with their looks, some with their clothes, some with maintaining the body/attire/attitude that fits to their choice of cliques, be it businessman, bear, twink, goth, emo, lumberjack, <insert Village Person stereotype here>, etc. Wouldn'y you say they all are narcissistic too? Just about as much as the profiles saying "fashionista for similar" or "I'm well read, you be too" or "Hairy male for same, no twinks apply" or "You must be younger/older than <insert age here>, no exceptions", etc?

Everyone has some obsession, whether it's with their bodies, attitudes, looks, pet peeves, non-conformity, etc. It's easier to just ignore those that don't mesh with you, and pick people whose obsessions match yours and enjoy their company ;)

  • There's nothing wrong with exercise. But there is something wrong with those who use it as the latest fad way to show what a totally superior fag they are. As the latest superior gay clique to belong to.

Lines from profiles I've read on another site:

"I'm in great shape. You be too."

"Must work out 3-4 times a week."

    "Muscle for muscle only."

"What gym do you belong to?"

Course I realize this is Dallas, where such attitude is the norm, but I'm sure that is common in places like California and South Florida, too.

    Enough!

If that attitude were the norm, I'd rather be fat and happy :)
