This really blew me away. Gore Vidal was a true giant of American literature and culture. He was also an important figure in bringing "gay" to the fore of American society.

I'm sure all the older guys on here will be well aware of his enormous contributions to society, but those of you who are younger would be well advised to give some of his work a look. For gay men, the obvious place to start is his groundbreaking 1960s transgendered novel "Myra Breckenridge." A little dated now, but still a great read.

  • even more important is "the city and the pillar", gore vidal's 40's novel. it ruined his political career and got him blacklisted by the major newspapers, all because the main characters are two well adjusted, attractive gay men.

he was a highly visible presence on the 60's talk shows and always had an outspoken opinion. we need more like him.
