Boy Scouts consider ending ban on gays

Interesting development. You could say this is a landmark move. Or, the cynic could say it's a way for the national Scouts to deflect responsibility and get groups to reconsider their donations, while at the same time leaving the ban mostly unchanged. Hmmmm. I guess time will tell.

  • BTW, AP says today that the Scouts have 110,000 units in the US and 70 percent are chartered by religious organizations. I didn't realize it was near that high.

  • I'm sure its because of church sponsorship of many troops that the Scouts declined to lift the ban entirely but left it up to individual troops. On the whole I think this decision would be a good thing but it remains to be seen if it is anything more than symbolic

  • Kink...the old catholic church is not recognized as "catholic". I was speaking of the Roman Catholic. I know a priest for the old catholic church and I have to say he is the biggest lush and is the most evil person I ever met (he lures young straight boys to his home and makes them perform sex acts with him against their will and then threatens them with blackmail)......Old Catholic or Roman Catholic....all religions are a cult.

  • I have to say I used to feel the same way as Kelley about the Catholic Church. That is until one day I was at a Gay Pride event in Florida. There was a booth for The Old Catholic Church. I spoke to the Priest and some of the others in the booth. They gave their liturature and when I got home I read it. They do not follow the pope. The mass is identical to the roman catholic church. The only difference, EVERYONE IS WELCOME at The Old Catholic Church. It turns out the Priest is gay has a partner, the Bishop is gay and has a partner. I felt so comfortable and welcome I have been attending mass every week. I know this church would welcome a Boy Scout Troop.
    I guess my attitude will have to change towards the Boy Scouts if they really do allow gay members. Until now everytime I saw them looking for donations, my response was "Sorry I don't suppoet any organization that teaches Prejuice".

  • With the knowledge that most boy scout troups are part of a local church (mostly Roman Catholic), the acceptance of homosexuals in the scouts is highly unlikely. I live in one of the most Catholic areas of Chicago with, no less than, 10 Catholic churches within a 4 mile radius. Each church has a scout troup. Upon me seeing this on the news last night, I researched the troups in that 4 mile area. There were 15 troups.....all affiliated with a church. The only one that there could be a remote chance of gay acceptance is the one affiliated with the Lutheran church. Most Lutheran churches long ago started doing civil unions for same sex couples. It's a shame that a group such as the Boy Scouts who, supposedly, are there to mold our male youth, are molding them into biggoted homophobes. This is the same reason I left the Catholic Church and never looked back. I find all religious organizations and groups like the scouts to be nothing but brainwashing cults. Stepping down from the soap box.

  • Girl Scouts are TOTALLY NOT affiliated with the Boy Scouts. In fact Girl Scouts are constantly bombarded for allowing transgendered (girls with a penis) and lesbians in their troops, supporting sex education and other feminist agenda points. You go girls!

    Boy Scouts on the other hand have been largely co-opted by the Mormans since the 1990's. Churches are typically the local sponsor of a troop.

  • Politically and financially motivated for sure. Bottom line is the local chapter can make the decision.
    I will still boycott the Boy and Girl Scouts.

  • it's a really easy way to pass the buck, if you ask me. they shed the liability, yet can claim the glory for any progressive change. politically pretty smart but it reinforces their image as a bunch of shitheels.
