Hillary Clinton announces support of same-sex marriage

OK, so no surprise there. In fact, the most suprising thing is that I had just assumed she already had. Hillary has long been a strong, vocal and visible supporter of gay rights, so you kind of thought that was a no-brainer.

But a bigger deal than that is included in this story, and it shows just how incredibly dramatically public opinion has turned on the issue of gay marriage.

A new Washington Post poll shows that 58 percent of Americans now SUPPORT same-sex marriage. That is a complete reversal from just a few years ago. And 72 percent of Democrats now do so.

The GOP has to be looking at these numbers and shivering. No wonder Sen. Portman did the switcheroo.

  • Yes, the Supremes could do us, and the GOP, a big favor and essentially end the debate over gay marriage by declaring it legal in all 50 states. I would be shocked if they did that, but it's not an impossible outcome of the Prop. 8 or DOMA cases. If they ruled DOMA completely void, states would be compelled by tradition to accept marriages performed in states in which it is legal. That would be tested by conservative states, of course, so the issue would wind up back on the Supremes' docket.

  • And the Supreme court hears the marrage issue next week....This is truely exciting. I don't think any of us of a certain age would have ever dreamed that this would happen in their lifetime. It's truely amazing.

  • 2016 could well be the last presidential election in which gay marriage is an issue. Public opinion is moving so strongly in favor that it won't be long until most gop candidates start avoiding the issue. I don't know that I've ever seen public opinion move so strongly ans so fast on an isuue. Ten years ago it had almost no support. Now a clear majority of americans is in favor.

  • No idea whether she'll run. After all, she, better than probably anyone, knows just how difficult a presidential campaign can be, and hell, how difficult being president can be.

As to whether she would win, I'd say she'd have a good shot, but it's too early and too many variables. What will the economy be like, and who will the GOP nominate?

  • Fenway, u r right, it was her first step. Look for her to be releasing more position statements on a regular basis. I plan already to work for her election as hard as I did for President Obama's which means many miles of walking and knocking on doors and calling. The Democratic HQ in Chicago has such a sophisitcated system that volunteers end up talking only to prospects who have voted Democratic in the past or are leaning toward progressive ideas. It's actually a stimulating and invigorating process to talk with these people. It also wins elections.

I truly believe Hillary will be the first woman president. She will if I have anything to do with it.

  • I think if she runs, she will be unbeatable by anyone.

  • I hope this was her first step for a run for the White House.
