Bill Clinton urges Supreme Court to overturn DOMA

Glad to see Bill finally come around on this one.

I don't know what the court will do on the Prop. 8 case from CA, but I feel almost certain that the Supremes will at the least overturn the portion of DOMA dealing with benefits.

  • DOMA is a terrible law, but remember that it was part of a deal to keep Congress from passing an anti-gay marriage constitutional amendment. So it might have saved our bacon. Back then, gay marriage was considered a radical idea, and if DOMA had not existed back when the MA court ruled to allow same-sex marriage, who knows? An amendment might have passed.

But it should have been repealed by now. This should have been done in the first two years of the Obama administration, but he made a big point of not wanting to put gay issues at the front end of his term in office.

  • Those conservative Supremes might surprise us on DOMA. I only have hope for maybe Roberts out of that pack of conservative radicals.
