Obama administration to file brief in support of gay marriage in Prop. 8 case

This doesn't rate as a surprise, but it's still a big deal for the gay community. And this stands as a huge example of why presidential elections really DO matter:

  • March 26th can't come soon enough -- I'm excited to hear the arguments. I'm curious if the SC will rule expansively or confine its judgement(s) solely to California. I'm thinking the former as I doubt the court does not want to hear this argument or some minutiae of this argument again. I think it's cool that Obama (Justice Department), those pro football players, and a slew of Republicans filed their respective friend of the court briefs.

  • Remember, the whole idea of gay marriage wasn't taken seriously at all until the Massachusetts court ruling in 2003. And even then, not many gay people took it seriously.

Since I live in TX, I know I won't see it here in my lifetime UNLESS there is a Supreme Court ruling. I think that will eventually happen, but I'd be VERY surprised if it happened on the upcoming cases. But, who knows?

It appears that the Obama brief urges the court to rule in favor of marriage rights in CA, not necessarily nationwide.

  • Gay marriage is slowly taking the same path that interracial marriage did back in 1967. It's only a matter of time. And if it does happen it truly will transform our society on so many levels.
