Texas cities can't offer same-sex benefits, AG rules

Republicans in general, and Texas Republicans in particular, just don't seem to get that crap like this makes them look petty and mean and is going to doom them to electoral hell in the future. Even here in TX, recent polls show 59 percent of the younger generation supports same-sex marriage. And they won't even let a few dozen people get health and dental insurance. Really pathetic.

  • I don't know that the story was clear on this point, but Abbott is an all-but-announced candidate for governor next year. So obviously he wasn't going to take any chance on offending the really mean folks in the religious right. I don't know whether it would be worthwhile for the cities involved to test the ruling in court though. It would be determined ultimately by the Texas Supreme Court which is, you guessed it, all Republican, and mostly a bunch of Rick Perry appointees. Sadly, though, we don't have the option of voting these clowns out of office yet. The Republican Party would have to get rid of them. Like that's going to happen.

  • It's incredibly petty and such a drag. It's all the more reason for there to be a federal decision striking down these bigoted marriage laws. Reading the article, it looks like Abbott gets his cake and to eat it too, only as it's the AG's opinion and not the law. Those that do have benefits--it least in the short-term--will be able to keep their benefits. Right now, Abbott looks good to his conservative voters (but looking like a petty shithead to the rest of us) while basically changing nothing.

That said, it looks like some creeps are using their legislative power to chip away at the benefits: "At least one bill in the Texas House, HB 1568, would revoke accreditation and withhold state funding from any school district that offers domestic partnership benefits. Co-authors include state Reps. Krause, Giovanni Capriglione, R-Southlake, Stephanie Klick, R-Fort Worth, Jonathan Stickland, R-Bedford, and Bill Zedler, R-Arlington."

I hope that bill does not make it out of the House.

  • All that and more is true about most Republicans, however ......

  • There is not much we can do to change the minds of these narrow minded biggots. What we can do, is vote them out of office!!
