Real scandal or just politics?

OK the Obama administration is currently embroiled in three scandals which the GOP has actually said are worse than Watergate!

Political hyperbole aside are these much ado about nothing or is there the substance of real scandal there?

I'd say one is real, one is fake, and the third its premature to say .

1. Benghazi. We've discussed this one quite a bit. My vote on this one is fake. Even if there was a coverup it was so minor as to be meaningless.

2. IRS targets tea party groups. This is the one I consider premature there will be lots of yelling and finger pointing because of the groups involved -- everyone hates the IRS, and the tea party never met a government conspiracy theory they didn't believe. But so far there is no indication of anything more than bureaucratic bungling and the only harm was a processing delay. I'm willing to change my mind if something substantive emerges.

3. Justice Department subpoenas AP phone records. This is potentially the real one. The justice department appears to have been overzealous and overstepped. This is an argument we've been waging for a bit now but we can't allow the war on terror to trample fundamental American rights and freedom of the press is about as basic as they get.

  • I guess no one remembers the IRS using the religious right to check the liberal churches. This was under George W's administration. He used to right anywhere he could. I just find the hypocrisy of the situations so much of a joke. Does anyone remember the Iran Contra Scandals. Republicans always try to unseat the democratic president with scandals. Remember the Monica Lewinsky affair? They tried to impeach Clinton because his dick was in the wrong place. At the same time there was a Republican congressman for S Carolina who divorced his wife be cause she had cancer and had other affairs. Again Hypocrisy.

  • 1. I agree
    2. Bureaucrats trying to enforce something they have no idea how to enforce/Need tax law reform
    3. The big issue here is the ongoing war on terror. Drones,Gitmo,Pentagon budgets. Where are we headed?

  • Just an aside here, but the IRS case is directly related fallout from the Supreme Court's DREADFUL Citizens United decision. Since it appears that the Dems may have the presidency for awhile, I think that decision should be tested ASAP when there is a shift in the court's makeup. I actually think Citizens United ranks among the court's worst decisions of all time. Right down there with Dred Scott, Bowers v. Hardwick, and Bush v. Gore.

  • I agree with you on the third point guy. Even though the AP scandal is the one most likely to represent real wrongdoing on the part of the Obama administration, it is also the one least likely to become a high-profile scandal.

And that's simply because its the one Obama's loudest critics are likely to care the least about.

  • 1. Benghazi: Right wing conspiracy to drag down Hillary Clinton.

    2. IRS: the head of the IRS at the time was A Bush appointee. Being a former federal employee, I can certainly understand it. Why because the tea party people are rude, arrogant assholes. Having worked the counter at a post office in former Tea Party Congressman Joe Walsh's district (the deadbeat dad), I've been punched in the chest, had mail tubs thrown at me, cursed and sworn at. The contempt they show for all government workers is unbelievable. They probably pissed some off at the IRS and those guys know how to play hardball.

    3. AP phone records: totally unnecessary and stupid. But can the right wing really stand up for the liberal mainstream press. LMAO! Go after Murdoch, first!
