Three storm chasers killed in Oklahoma tornado

Surprising this kind of thing doesn't happen more often. Apparently the Reno tornado behaved erratically, plus the roads were clogged with a combination of rush hour traffic and people running. Most of the victims of this tornado were killed in vehicles.

  • I wonder if this tornado will make people rethink the storm chaser industry? It's one thing for people who work for weather agencies to do this, but ... Don't know if you guys knew this, but there are actually people doing this as a form of for-profit "tourism," i.e. taking paying customers to watch tornadoes.

  • This is also the same tornado that got The Weather Channel truck though their crew was fortunate and survived.

  • This guy was a scientist who studied the tornados. He wasn't some uninformed yahoo out there for a thrill ride. He had even invented and built devices to do studies of these storms. His actions may have led some others to chase storms, but that was their decision. He had a record of extreme care while getting close enough to learn more about how tornados form and function. The one that got him made an unusual change of direction that violated the usual pattern. One meteorologist said it was similar to a spinning top as it gets started. Once it is going, its path becomes somewhat predictable, but in the start-up it wobbles and veers.

  • The other night they showed storm chasers in an armored vehicle filming the inside of a tornado. They know the risks that come with a job like that. If I lived in the part of the country I'd have a bunker underground.

  • This reminds me of the extreme sports enthusiasts who B.A.S.E. jump in wingsuits and stuff like that. There are dramatic videos to be seen on YouTube, but they don't show what happens when things go wrong (S-P-L-A-T !!!)

Same for storm chasers. There are plenty of movies and documentaries glamorizing it, enticing daredevils and thrill seekers to try it. Guess what? Mother Nature is a bitch not to be trifled with, as they soon found out. May you R.I.P., fools!
