Star WWE wrestler comes out

Another sign of how times have changed. I'm assuming this is legit as opposed to a plot development, however, either way, it shows that pro wrestling is willing to embrace a gay character. That in and of itself is pretty amazing.

  • It will be interesting to see if they incorporate this into the wrestling plot line. (Maybe it is part of the plot line.) And if so will he continue to be a good guy or switch over to bad?

  • of course.......gorgeous george was a development of the pansy figure from the 20's and 30's...but he was also embraced by the wrestling fans and managers. i think the latest incarnation of that whole show could be this new guy coming out-after all, it is suddenly fashionable again to have a gay figure as your very own pet rock.

  • Gorgeous George was from back in the day when Americans thought gay looking/sounding characters were great fun. Remember Milton Berle, Jack Benny, Liberace and "Some Like It Hot."

  • he may not have been actually gay (who knows?) BUT he was a big camp and the audiences loved it.

  • I've always maintained wrestling is very homoerotic (and WWE blatantly so). Still, I'm not sure just how well this would be accepted from the wrestling community, and more importantly, the fan base. The wrestling fans, in general, are like fans of rap and metal music - very homophobic. WWE fans tend to be more blue-collar in general, so I'm not very optimistic about the guy's career.

  • Thanks for finding these great stories about men in sports making a difference for tolerance/acceptance! I have to repeat my earlier comment about the athlete in Russia for this guy in wrestling, "He's a handsome guy both inwardly and outwardly."

P.S. I expect some redneck wrestler to make a fuss about this though. It would be nice if the world was beyond caring about sexual orientation in the workplace, but that's unfortunately, not real!
