Python kills two brothers in Canada

This has to be one of the saddest and most improbable stories I've seen in awhile. A 14- to 16-foot African rock python escaped from a pet shop in New Brunswick, Canada, and killed these two adorable young brothers.

They were visiting the owner of the pet shop, who lived in an apartment above the store.

The rock python is an extremely aggressive snake that should NOT be kept by pet owners. It may or may not have been legal in the pet shop it was in (I've seen conflicting reports).

Anyway, the pet shop owner's life should be FUCKED. And I hope that Canada will do a better job of that than the U.S. Canada cares a lot more about people than the U.S. does, so at least there's a chance.

Sad fact is that in the U.S., what would likely happen is the guy would pay a fine for the snake, the pet shop would declare bankruptcy, the kids' parents would get whatever paltry insurance policy the shop had (if it had one at all), and the guy could go start another pet shop if he wanted.

  • The initial autopsy report shows the boys died from asphyxiation, which would be consistent. I was skeptical, too, but have talked to some snake owners who say constrictors will sometimes kill more than one target before going back to eat. They don't necessarily kill by crushing. What they do is hold so tight that the victim can't breathe, and suffocates. So the cause of death would check.

The snake was found in the room with the boys, and they were killed at night, so perhaps no noise?

Apparently the snake was set up in a big glass or acrylic cage, but the flaw was that the ceiling was also the "top" of the cage. So the snake was able to escape through the ceiling.

Horrible story, and Canadian authorities are considering criminal charges.

  • Yeah Im confused what happened. That news story said the boys were sleeping and the snake fell down through the air vent, and grabbed them and squeezed them to death.

  • Yeah, this story appeared here, too, and I don't belive it. Just plain nonsense.
How can ONE python - regardless how big he is - bring to death by constriction TWO people........

  • BTW, guys, these snakes have been found in the wild in Florida. They may not be established yet like the Burmese python, but they have found them breeding in localized areas. This is a much more dangerous snake to humans than the Burmese, which has been playing havoc with wildlife in the Everglades.
