American conservative groups praise Russia

Well, isn't this rich. The same folks who used to say Russia was the devil incarnate and tell us liberals in not so polite terms that we should move there are now singing Russia's praises. And all because the Russians passed tougher laws restricting abortion and punishing gay people.

OK, I'll say it. These folks should all go to Russia. Sounds like a perfect fit. Go convert the guys in the Kremlin and leave us alone. Your ideas no longer belong in America, or any other civilized country, anyway.

  • Neither DOMA nor DADT were even remotely close to what Russia is doing today. Russia has effectively made it illegal to be gay. There might be a superficial similarity to DADT, but recall that gays were banned in the military BEFORE DADT. Plus serving in the military is optional.

  • Dictators need scapegoats.
    Hitler had his.
    Now Putin has his.

  • Frank Bruni's nice piece in today's NY Times exceeds the 5000 character allowed here, but it's worth the read: http://www.nytimes.com/2013/08/06/opinion/bruni-s … e&_r=0

Here's the link to Havey Firestein's piece that Bruni refers to: http://www.nytimes.com/2013/07/22/opinion/russias … ef=opinion

Last for a different perspective from Firestein, this is from Burni's blog featuring a short talk with Greg Louganis and his commentary. The read is good, and, as a bonus, Bruni posts a contemporary pic of Greg, who just keeps getting better looking with age: http://bruni.blogs.nytimes.com/2013/07/29/an-olym … d-bigotry/

  • Well, I agree with Beht, to a point. But I don't think that's the whole story in Russia. Putin is a smart man and a shrewd politician. I feel I can say with confidence that he doesn't care about the rights of gay people, one way or the other. I.e., he doesn't hate gay people, but rather he's using us as a tool. But for what? He knows that homosexuality is extremely unpopular in Russia (one recent poll said 86% oppose equal rights for gay people, one of the highest percentages in the world). So for whatever reason, it appears that Putin has decided that he wants to suck up to popular opinion right now. His unpopularity has been growing, so the problem could be as simple as that. Another opinion is that he may be trying to divert attention away from an impending scandal -- reports indicate his cronies may have stolen $30 BILLION in money for the Olympics.

He also knows that this law would be extremely disliked in the West. That, combined with the Snowden asylum, would seem to make it look like Russia has decided to do an us-against-the-world thing. He's flexing his muscles, but for what purpose?

Anyway, I'm not sure why, but Putin is up to something, and gay people, unfortunately, are part of his scheme.

  • The religious right... How do we describe them? If there is a god-love surely the church is the demon-evil. There have an answer for everything and somehow those answers always benefits them. They claim to represent ‘a god,’ but act in the most ungodly manner. They attack others then cry when others do onto them in return. They accuse others of unforgivable inequities then ask for forgiveness when they commit the same. Every religion praises forgiveness as they hold to their grudges and retaliate with a vengeance.
Modern Russia... How do we describe them? If there is a world court Russia is the Clarence Thomas. They are impressed with their own power even though that power is on paper, like a dollar bill which represents a promise- not a value. The only real difference between Russia and religion is Russia tells you to fuck-off rather than ask for forgiveness. Why wouldn’t our religious right be envious and want to suck up.
Oh, one more thing, just a statistic. The life expectancy for a young Russian today is somewhere in the forties. Between alcoholism, and AIDS it is common to find young people in the Spring as ‘Snow Drops’ (Actual term) found frozen to death months after when the snow finally melts. Russia is as caring as the church. Both try to hold on to a value that is long gone.
    Thanks BearinFW for the post.

  • Quiltguy, I feel like that old man. I wonder why some people take to hate so much more quickly than they take to love.

This shows how shallow they are and how hypocritical they have always been.

  • And if you think Russia can't get any weirder:

The Russians now say Lady Gaga and Madonna broke the anti-gay law and could be punished.

BTW, the reference in this story is to a statement by the Russian sports minister, who says the law won't be enforced during the Olympics. This contradicts what other officials have said, so we'll see ...
