Honey Boo Boo jumps the Shark(nado)

And the Dynasty guys quack up while Keeping Up with the Kardashians.

I'm embarrassed to admit that I watched the season opener of Here Comes Honey Boo Boo (no, I didn't get the Scratch and Sniff magazine insert). Regrettably, it is 30 minutes of my life that I'll never get back.

So what does it say about 21st-century America that absolutely stupid crap like this passes for popular?

  • I think we can all agree that there are a lot of programs on TV that are a profound waste of any thoughtful persons time. It seems the good programs at least on Network television have been in danger of getting the axe. Well written dramas with established actors are more expensive to produce (e.g., The Event, 666 Park Avenue) It seems the television networks now are about whats the least complicated and cheapest to produce. Company shareholders are first priority. The viewer? Well lets throw him another commercial to distract him from the crap he's watching. Can you imagine the shelf life of BREAKING BAD on NBC?

  • Is this a great country or what? I was lucky tonight and got to see "Sharknado," the Sci-Fi channel "classic." Unlike Honey Boo Boo, this movie at least has a plot, such as it is. Actually, if you're a fan of bad movies, this one is very "good." Everything about it reeks of inauthenticity :)

  • The Honey Boo Boo show is plenty white trashy. But I found it lacked spontaneity and wasn't even interesting, much less funny. Who cares?

Are shows like this and Duck Dynasty just the modern-day equivalent of the Beverly Hillbillies and Gomer Pyle?

  • Pop culture (especially TV) has supplanted real hands-on culture in the U.S. Reality shows and cheap sit coms top the list of mind-numbing TV fair.

I pretty much agree with Isaac Asimov.

Although Asimov is known mainly for his science fiction books, he was also a professor of biochemistry at Boston University. Asimov was one of the most prolific writers of all time, having written or edited more than 500 books and an estimated 90,000 letters and short stories. As evidence of his broad interests and expertise, his books have been published in nine out of ten major categories of the Dewey Decimal library classification system.
