Two New Mexico counties issuing same-sex marriage licenses

This is an exciting story that has been flying mostly under the radar.

But this week, the county clerk of Dona Ana County in New Mexico decided to start issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples, and now Santa Fe County is poised to follow.

New Mexico is an oddity among the 50 states because its constitution makes no gender reference on the topic of marriage. Gay couples have tried to push the issue before, but have been refused licenses. Now the tide has turned. So far, there's no real effort to stop it. But stay tuned. I imagine there will be.

  • Update: Bernalillo County, the county that includes Albuquerque, has been ordered by a state judge to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples and will begin doing so Tuesday. This makes three counties now. And so far no one has tried to stop them.

  • This a great story--you hope they all flock in from the states surrounding NM.
