Wish i could say i was surprisex by the upset that Trump looks like he may spring but sadly im not. For two reasons. Hillarys unpopularity was a lingering issue that just could not be put away. And Republican voters in this country have become so radicalized that they are proving Trump right. He could have shot someone dead in the street and theyd still vote for him. GOPers vote en masse regardless and i never bought that they wouldnt. Also im not sure models accounted for drop in black vote that was bound to happen post Obama.
He *might* not be such a bad president domestically. His more extreme ideas will be thwarted by a GOP controlled Congress that is likely to continue to be resistant to getting ANYTHING done. They've been that way for 16 years, so why should we expect anything different now?
Of course, he is clueless on foreign policy, so we'll have to just cross our fingers and hope for the best on that :)
And he's definitely not the worst potential GOP president for our community. I know it's not saying much, but he quite likely is the most pro-gay (or at least not anti-gay) Republican president in history. Cross our fingers that his Supreme Court picks are few and they're not TOO radical Republican.
I do fear for the millions of Americans who are about to find themselves without health insurance again due to the now certain demise of Obamacare. I pray that Trump and the GOP mean it when they say they will replace it with something better, though I think the chances of that actually happening are something close to zero. White Americans in general, and especially Republican ones, need to learn again to be empathetic for those less fortunate than themselves, something that sadly, has been largely loss amid the self-centered cruelty of conservative talk radio, Fox News and the internet. I will hope that Trump, who is not beholden to the right-wing machine, can maybe start to steer some Republicans back in the right direction.
It was a very close election. The Democrats had a lot of negatives to overcome this cycle, and Hillary just wasn't able to do it. She wasn't able to pass the "beer test," (i.e., who would I rather have a beer with?) which has decided every U.S. presidential election since 1992. I don't know why American voters are so hung up on likability, but it's just a sad fact of life. A lot of great past presidents could never have been elected under the current standard.
