Russian Parliament to consider law removing children from gay parents

This is absolutely horrific. Short of killing gay people, there is nothing worse that you could do to them.

If Russia should dare to consider this, the West must take immediate action in the form of boycotts and sanctions. Such a blatant violation of human rights cannot be ignored.

  • Oh, c'mon guy. I know you Republican types are out to trash Hillary, but whatever perceived horrors the Clintons may have committed, they don't even remotely compare to taking people's kids away from them. Get a grip, man.

  • Yes, Barney, it is truly shocking that there are no small number of Americans who also think this incredibly destructive law would be a good idea. And they have a lot of clout in the Republican Party!

  • What is truly sad about all of this is that our own anti gay protagonists here in the US are helping the Russians to write these laws. One of them is going to speak on Saturday at the latest gathering of the nut cases of the GOP this weekend.

  • Russia is a major oil supplier. Hit them with an economic boycott a la Iran. Of course, the UN won't be able to do anything, since Russia is a permanent member of the Security Council and has veto power. But countries can and should act outside the UN.

Assuming this law passes, the West should also offer political asylum to gay people who are able to flee Russia. Even before this story broke, some gay parents in Russia had been sending their children out of the country. I would hope that some sort of arrangement could be made to provide sanctuary for the kids of gay parents until they can be reunited. I know I'd be willing to help.

Things are getting really ugly in Russia. If I were a gay person there I would fear for my safety, because all the hateful rhetoric from the government is almost certainly inciting anti-gay violence.

I fear that things are going to get much worse there before they get better. I'm still not sure why Putin & Co. have decided that it is to their advantage to scapegoat gay people at this time. I hate to say it, but what is happening there is sending up all kinds of red flags of the sort people must have seen about Nazi Germany.

  • Just what good do they think will come of jerking kids out of a loving home and shoving them into an "ideal" Russian Orthodox family? The poor kids would feel this disjointed feeling for the rest of their lives. Aren't there any intelligent psychologists/psychiatrists to argue against this abrogation of family and justice?

  • There is already a boycott of Russian vodka in gay bars. Not sure what else we could boycott to get their attention. Perhaps the Winter Olympics. Although it is amusing that Elton John is scheduled to perform. Guess they don't know he is gay. And he declined to cancel his performance, guess $$$ heals all wounds or wounds all heels.
