Sochi Olympics are underway

The Winter Games in Sochi kicked off today, and the Opening Ceremony is Friday. Just wondering if you guys are interested and plan to watch some. What about the gay boycott? Does that affect your viewing plans?

I'll have to admit that I'm pretty ambivalent about these Games, but I'm an Olympic sports fan and I'm sure I'll watch some. My favorite sport in the Winter Games is cross country skiing. I know that won't get much play on NBC (which will be mostly figure skating), but I'm hoping it gets some coverage on the affiliated stations.

I'm pretty much sick to death of figure skating and the Games haven't even started. However, I imagine if the gay issue is going to crop up, that's the most likely place for it.

  • I really enjoy the Olypics.... the sports aspect... not any of the political stuff. The opening ceremonies were spectacular and it shows Russia is really trying to host the games in a great way. When I watched the Russian volunteers etc on the sidelines, how they were cheering and so happy to be a part of the event, I realized yet again, it's about the people, the sports... not the governments involved.

  • I'm NOT going to watch it. It all comes down to money. Big audience, big revenue for the sponsors, big revenue for the tv-companies and if all are happy in the end Russia can say ''You see, we bang the homos and still we get the games, and still the games are a great profit!

Imagine if Sochi would NOT have gotten the games. Imagine if every country/city candidating would know they have to pass through a real test: how they treat the poor, how they treat the women, how they treat the immigrants, how they treat the disabled, how they treat the homos...

But Russia and the international olympic committee can rely on one thing: there will always be enough (homos) wanting to watch the games so it gets a big revenue.

  • I want nothing to do with competition! People take it too seriously. Sore losers creating riots destroying people's property. Winners think they are God. It is a game get over it!

  • Thank you Google. This is the logo on Russia https://www.google.ru

    The translation says:
""The practice of sport is a human right. Every individual must have the possibility of practicing sport, without discrimination of any kind and in the Olympic spirit, which requires mutual understanding with a spirit of friendship, solidarity and fair play." –Olympic Charter"

  • I'm excited about the Games. I'm a winter sport's enthusiast, and I'm hoping for a great time for all the athletes and spectators.

I'm with Marc, too, it's hard to separate the shitty politics from the events, so it's a drag that Russia gets to be a showcase while its political leaders can implement appalling policy geared towards those already marginalized. Ian Buruma writes a bummer piece on how the history of the Games, and other sporting spectacles, is replete with shitty turns like what's happening in Russia. (It's not an excuse to ignore what's happening, but only to point out that Putin and his ilk are not the only turds who have profited from these events) http://t.co/NEA18riCqX

That said, I can't wait for the games to begin. Like AC's video shows, the Games have always been a little gay. I sure would not mind slipping in behind Steven Holcomb (pictured here), captain of the US bobsled team, in the bobsled! :) Woof!

  • OTOH, Marc, I think it's good for gay people in Russia that Sochi is hosting the Games. It gives a far greater platform and visibility for Russia's shabby treatment of gays. That wouldn't be getting nearly as much attention without the Olympics. Hopefully the international response will at least get the Russian government to lighten up a little. Maybe not pass the law that would remove gay people's children (which would be a heinous human rights abuse).

  • For some reason it just irritates the crap out of me that Sochi was chosen in the first place, my heart isn't in it.

As most people know the journalists were Tweeting about how bad their accomidations are i.e.; no running water, no toilet etc. A Sochi official responded by saying "Our Shower Surveillance Footage Says Hotels Are Fine".
    Just................wow......
So they are watching from inside the rooms lol!

Im not a big fan of Russia anyways. This is being spread out over the internet lately showing how gays are treated there. These attackers are animals and the government pretty much supports it.
I feel so bad for the gay people who live there.
