One of world's top HIV/AIDS researchers was on Malaysia flight

It's really a cruel twist of fate that a plane carrying perhaps as many as 100 people, including top AIDS researchers from around the world, to a conference in Australia was shot down by (directly or indirectly) the country that is arguably the world's most homophobic non-Third World nation.

Vladimir Putin does great harm to gay people, and humanity as a whole, yet again. I don't think the world has yet to fully grasp just what an evil man Putin is.

Russia cannot be allowed to get away with this atrocity. Unless they agree to (and actually do) cease involvement in Ukraine, as well as pay reparations for the plane, Russia should be subjected to Iran-style sanctions, including a ban on oil trade. That would hit Putin where it hurts.

That might take some time, but an easier thing the West could do, and one that would also hurt Russia both economically and in terms of pride, would be to pull the 2018 World Cup out of Russia. I can't imagine Western countries wanting to go anyway under the current circumstances. And a country like England, Germany or even the U.S. could put on the cup with relatively little notice.

  • I thought it was clear that the article referenced was purely tongue in cheek. I wouldn't be surprised, however, if Putin were more popular than Obama among Republicans -- well, at least until this happened. That is the total disdain with which most of the GOP holds the president. I think it's even worse than what Dems thought of George W.

  • @AC--I thought so too, but then when I got to the part about Michelle Bachmann talking about husband Marcus' (remember him? The big teddy bear!) Putin obsession and his desire to meet Putin and to "touch [his] greatness"....I just knew it was true.

If that did not convince you, the peripheral article of Sarah Palin castigating Americans for running up the foreign trade deficit by eating too much Chinese take-out should have convinced you of the seriousness of The Daily Currant. BTW, Sarah gets it right again when she states: "But can’t we go without Chinese take-out? There are so many good, old-fashioned American choices out there. Ever heard of pizza?”

  • Um. I really hope people don't take that article from The Daily Currant (or any other article from the site) as real.. Much like the Onion, The Daily Currant is a satire news site, albeit dedicated to almost exclusively mocking the Far-right wingers.

  • Ask yourself one simple question:
Who had something to gain from this crime ?
Basically neither Poutine or the Ukrainian separatists but the regular government of Ukraine who is desperately trying to get the West involved in his fight......
The Ukrainian government has been known in the past for its corruption and lies
Things might not be as clear as they seems
You Americans are too fast to judge and condemn others countries tie up in very complex situations
Lets first see who was behind all this before going forward with sanctions
You are probably right but just probably......
This is a dangerous situation and a lot of care should be taken in order to avoid manipulations

  • I'll bet a lot of those same right wingers who were gushing over Putin for his anti-gay initiatives and for outwitting Obama are now wishing they'd kept their mouth shut. Notice they having been saying so much since Putin invaded Crimea.

  • Right wingers admire the man (monster) who is responsible for (in my opinion) shooting down the Malaysian airliner. Here is the first part of an article from "The Daily Current" Right wingers go for the macho bravado (caveman thinking) exhibited in the attached photo. This knuckle-dragger is more popular with the right wingers than our President who they have worked overtime to ruin because he has skin darker than theirs and stands for policies that help the middle class and the poor who are striving to enter the middle class.

    Putin Tops 2016 Republican Poll
    Mar 18, 2014

[In a poll taken in May] Russia’s President Vladimir Putin is an early favorite among Republican voters to become the party’s presidential nominee in 2016.
Since the crisis in Ukraine began, Putin has earned unexpected support from right-wing pundits who see him as a more respected leader than President Barack Obama.
A phone survey of 5,000 registered voters conducted this week showed Putin’s newfound popularity has trickled down to conservative Republican voters, 66 percent of whom favored him over other potential candidates.
“Putin is everything Obama is not: decisive, tough, ballsy and quick thinking,” said Birch Barlow, a Twitter political activist. “Obama hasn’t even invaded any country; he just sends drones to do all the work.”
“Obama didn’t even kill Osama bin Laden; like a pussy, he sent the Marines to do it,” added voter Carlton Banks, whose military expertise comes from reading The Weekly Standard. “I bet Putin would have gone in alone and killed bin Laden with his bare hands. I like a candidate who is willing to kill for his country.”
