Election Day

Be sure to get out and vote if you haven't already. It's an important election, and it's vital that our voice be heard.

I got out early this morning here in Texas, where we're having a rainy day. I don't expect that this will be a very happy day for Democrats here. This is a Republican election year, and this is a Republican state. On top of that, Wendy Davis' gubernatorial campaign, which began with such promise, just never caught on. She lost valuable time early on after her father died and she had back surgery, and she just never generated any momentum.

I think the GOP's win streak here will end at some point in the not too distant future, but it's more likely to be in a presidential year, when Democratic turnout is better.

This year, Republican voters are MAD and motivated. (Although, to be honest, I don't really get why.)

Control of the Senate is the big prize this year, but even though Republicans are slightly favored to get it, not much is likely to change in Washington.

  • I would expect that many more bills will pass and as a result at least a few more become law than when the Dems ran the Senate. Most important thing is for Obama to be willing to use his veto power liberally. Don't compromise just for compromise's sake. The GOP is going to hate you regardless.

  • Living in south Georgia and being a out, partnered, gay Democrat makes me really understand minority. I totally understand your Texas description. It is mirrored here. The election results here are so predictable that some day when a true Democratic winner happens you will here a shout for joy.

  • I didn't get too wound up about this election because, in all honesty, it was easy to see what was coming. It was a predictably big night for the GOP, and it might have been even bigger except for the fact that Republicans have pretty much already won all they can win. I wouldn't read *too* much into this. Republicans were mad as hell and went all in. And as is usually the case in off-year elections, reactionary independents just went on autopilot and voted against the party in power. (Independents never cease to amaze me. They bitch about nothing getting done in Washington, then vote for a result that guarantees it -- go figure.)

I would say though, that this election should serve as a wake-up call to Democrats and progressive Americans -- if we are complacent again in 2016, the GOP, even though it is the minority party, would be all too happy to grab power in all three branches of government. They have two of three already, and won't be happy until they get them all. Which would be a disaster for all who truly value diversity and freedom in America.

  • In Florida we have early voting. I voted over a week ago. Hopefully we will see a change for the better here.

  • I agree with your assessment but Im confused why voters feel this way. I thought Obama did a great job.
Heres a video on the race in Texas.
Fast Forward about 3 minutes into it, Im stunned people could vote for those issues.
