ROMNEY'S ACCOUNT OF EGYPT EMBASSY INCIDENT IN DOUBT

..Romney's account of Egypt embassy incident in doubt
Reuters – Wed, Sep 12, 2012....

....(Reuters) - Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney has criticized the Obama administration for sympathizing with radical Islamists after the U.S. embassy in Cairo was breached by protesters, but the accuracy of his account is in question.

At the center of his criticism is a statement by the embassy condemning a film about the Prophet Mohammad that angered Islamists who stormed the building on Tuesday and burned the U.S. flag. The American ambassador to Libya and three embassy staff were killed in an attack in Benghazi to protest the same movie.

Romney said the embassy in Cairo denounced the film - called "Innocence of Muslims" - after the mission in Egypt was stormed, suggesting that President Barack Obama's administration had bowed to pressure from demonstrators.

But Reuters correspondents in Cairo said the embassy posted the statement on its Facebook page on Tuesday morning before the protest began, not after it had started.

A senior U.S. official also said the statement, which condemned "the continuing efforts by misguided individuals to hurt the religious feelings of Muslims," was released before any demonstrations had begun.

The statement was later pulled from the Internet because it was not coordinated with the State Department in Washington, the official said.

On Tuesday night, Romney said it was "disgraceful that the Obama administration's first response was not to condemn attacks on our diplomatic missions, but to sympathize with those who waged the attacks."

On Wednesday, the Republican candidate again criticized the embassy.

"The embassy in Cairo put out a statement after their grounds had been breached. Protesters were inside the grounds. They reiterated that statement after the breach. I think it is a terrible course for America to stand in apology for our values," he said in Jacksonville, Florida.

Romney campaign officials said that even after the embassy was stormed, it sent several Twitter messages referring to its earlier statement as well as condemning the embassy protests.

Critics, including some Republican allies, said Romney was too quick to use the Libya and Egypt incidents as fodder for a campaign attack before knowing the full extent of what happened in the two North African countries.

His statement on Tuesday broke a self-imposed truce on criticizing the president on the 11th anniversary of the September 11 attacks.

  • Here we go again.. hating on the poor atheist.
Just for the record, Religulous was a documentary showing inconsistencies and absurdities in a lot of organized religions, and in a relatively civilized manner. The movie in question was simply put, a cheap potshot at one religion, clearly intended to offend. There's a huge difference.

Of course, to you, Erlybrd they are all the same because Maher's a liberal who regularly makes fun of Republican candidates, and hence, is evil and needs to be put down. Even if his documentary did raise a lot of valid points. Cause who cares about truth when it's not on our side, right?

So really, there's no point in trying to have a rational debate over that. Any rationality gets thrown out of the window with a nonsensical irrelevant remark, which Beck or Limbaugh has probably already said before. So, I'll just state my case and let you gloat after you post some FauxNews-inspired cheesy cliche :)

  • Um. Condemning assholes who abuse their "freedom of expression" to pointedly ridicule and incite a section of the populace, known for their knee-jerk overreaction, fully aware of the consequences is a bad thing? Just because there's the freedom of speech doesn't mean the retarded director of the clearly offensive movie doesn't have to deal with the repercussions of his actions.

I don't condone the Islamic radicals' storming of the American embassy, and I agree it was clearly wrong, but that aside, I wouldn't support the idiot who made that dumb movie in the first place. I'd gladly offer him to the angry masses. I don't see how their anger is unjustified, with all the hullabaloo raised when Last Temptation and Passion of the Christ came out, was justified.

" I think it is a terrible course for America to stand in apology for our values,"

Yes, I'm sure everyone would agree that burning another religion's holy books and making offensive movies mocking their beliefs is a very American value, while apologizing for mistakes is a sign of cowardice.

  • Cmon, Erly. Romney's people made a mistake. Even a lot of Republicans are saying so off the record. That said, however, I don't necessarily think it was a HUGE deal. I don't think people are paying that close of attention, and foreign affairs aren't very high on people's priority list anyway.

  • Facts? Check out when the tweets were sent out. Check out when Romney responded. Check out when the attack was launched on Libya. Of course Romney's stupid response had nothing to do with Libya that is the point! he stuck his foot in his mouth during a major crisis that he thought was just a simple gaffe. I am sorry but he is a fool and it is sad that the Republicans offer him up as the best person to be President. I think someone here only wants to chide, ridicule, blame and does not want to take the time to actually do some research and get the facts. That doesn't surprise me as those on the Right have been doing that for decades. So enjoy your rants and your made up facts and get use to living with a black man as President.

  • erly. what does a possible rape have to do with this discussion? the subject is whether or not romney made a gaffe for political gain. besides, the rape story came from a lebanon newspaper, via news service APF. the validity of the story is debatable, at best. even if true, what bearing does it have?

  • Lets please get the record straight: First the embassy in Egypt sent out its first comments before the protests even started. Then when the protests started they resent another message urging everyone to be calm and respect each other's views. I don't think this is sympathizing with the protesters. I have been involved where rioters are getting out of control and it is not something to just ignore. Romney sent his ridiculous comments out before he even knew that there was an attack going on in Libya where we were having Americans killed. It is unwritten rule that during a crisis like this that you stand united and not be the idiot in the room offering up critizism from thousands of miles away without all of the facts. This behavior in someone seeking the highest office on the planet is unforegiveable and like our President said the American people will decide how best to judge him.

  • Romney tried to take advantage of a horrible situation for political gain. ALL Americans should be united solidly behind the Presdent, the State Department and the military as we face the turmoil in the Mideast.

  • I think this will come back to bite Romney in the ass.
