SEEN A GOOD MOVIE LATELY?
maybe it's just me but i'd have to answer NO. one of my guilty pleasures is going to the library and checking out free dvd's...but lately, everything i've gotten sucks (and not in the good way). except for reruns of OZ, i'm really having no luck. the last batch of 6 that i took out, i rejected each half way through. i automatically steer clear of anything that's adam sandler-ish, anything teeny, anything with loads of violence. so, guess what-i'm watching the entire back catalogue of meryl streep movies. has anyone seen anything really good, entertaining or thought provoking in the past few years and thought, "gee, i should tell someone what a good movie that was." if so, PLEASE , tell me. i getting desperate here, boys, i may have to start checking out "anne of green gables"!!!

Drive is just beautiful.. Neo-noir with hard-hitting performances..
Prometheus, I felt, was pretty neat too, as long as you don't compare it to the Alien franchise. Of course, the audience was pretty divided about it,so it's subjective I guess.
Dark Knight Rises was pretty fun, but nowhere as good as Dark Knight, IMO. It was so satisfying to see Tom Hardy break Christian Bale, but again, it's personal ;)
If you want plenty of cheese, braindead romcom with a lot of hunk skin, catch Magic Mike.
Now, if you did specify your preferred genres, I might be able to list out some personal favorites for recommendation :)
The Help (solid filmmaking here - emotional, funny and meaningful)
The Artist (won the Oscar for best pic this yr.)
Midnight in Paris (if you are a Woody Allan fan, this is great - he hits his stride with this one)
The Tree of Life (Brad Pitt in a different role and a deeply meaningful film about family)
The Descendants (Clooney in a great role - again about family and nonmaterialism)
Older favorites include:
The Graduate
Tootsie
Pulp Fiction
Close Encounters of the Third Kind
A Beautiful Mind
The African Queen
A Fish Called Wanda
Annie Hall
Dr. Zhivago
American Beauty
Almost anything by Tarantino - Pulp Fiction, Reservoir Dogs being top choices
Anything at all by Stanley Kubrick (yes, even Eyes Wide Shut with the awful Cruise/Kidman leads
James Cameron movies, BUT before Titanic. True Lies and Terminator 2 are my all-time favorites!
If you don't mind subtitles, there are tons of great foreign language movies out there. Far better than mainstream Hollywood, I'd say.. Personal recommendations : Michael Haneke (Cache, Piano Teacher, White Ribbon, etc), Pedro Almodovar (Volver, All About My Mother, Bad Education, The Skin I Live In), Akira Kurosawa (Rashomon, Seven Samurai, Ran, Ikiru, etc), Ingmar Bergman (Seventh Seal, Wild Strawberries, Virgin Spring), Tarkovsky (Solyaris, Stalker, etc),Fellini, Pasolini, Vittorio de Sica, etc .. too many really..
There's also been some incredibly good new waveAsian cinema lately, with very promising stuff from the Korean directors (Park Chan-Wook, Boon Jong-Ho, Kim Ji-Woon, etc)
Hollywood directors.. There's always Scorcese, early Spielberg, an occasional Luc Besson, Darren Arnofosky, etc
Eh. there's too long a list in my head somewhere, and not enough space to type them all out..
Also, don't miss the Millennium Trilogy in Swedish.. And Let the Right One In.. far better than the Hollywood remakes!
Happy viewing!
I enjoy going to the movies/theater for the popcorn and the comfortable chairs. Generally enjoy the newly-released animated flims.
Watching thrillers or good movies I find as much to my taste (or better) by staying home with cable TV. There are some really good films there... Everything from SyFy to Cowboys and Indians. Some movies I never get tired of and enjoy watching them once again.
