No More Help For The Gay Homeless?

when care is not taken as to which programs are forced dry, the effects of cutting the flow can have dire consequences. Take the Ali Forney Center for example, an organization that services our (too) many LGBT homeless youth on the streets. The Ali Forney Center doesn't just provide meals and beds, they help transition our homeless LGBT youth (our future) into stable and permanent housing and jobs. These young adults are more prone to drug abuse, sex work, HIV and mental illness and I've witnessed first hand how The Ali Forney Center assists these young adults. Ali Forney's Drop-in Center is where they make first contact and provide much needed assistance, support and services to these young adults—the start of their transition off the streets.

The Ali Forney Drop-in Center depends 100% on a flow of funds from a federal grant called HOPWA (Housing Opportunities for People with AIDS). HOPWA funding has been scaled down by the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, resulting in a choked valve of assistance to Ali Forney. Without HOPWA funding, the Drop-in Center will close. Without the Drop-in Center, our homeless LGBT will once again be turned away.

How Can You Help?
Contact the New York City Mayor's Office and let them know that our homeless LGBT teens need stable homes and jobs and that the Ali Forney Center helps provide those services. We've already lost too many. We can't afford to lose any more.

  • BTW, here is the web site for the Mayor of New York. I'm sure they have a "Contact Us" page there or a complaints department.

  • ERLYBRD seems to want to blame the President although he doesn't come right out and say it. Our President can only talk about change and use what is called the "bully pulpit" to advocate for change. The Congress is where changes are made. Unfortunately, the Republican majority in the House backs the Ryan budget which is the source of the indiscriminate cuts that are upcoming if it ever passes the Senate. So, while our President proposes laws like his Jobs Bill the Congress sees no political upside to letting him succeed. . . at ANYthing. Whatever has happened since the GOP (Greedy One Percenters) gained a majority in 2010 and whatever happens in the near future with funding choices, it is the GOP that will determine it all. If the Ryan Budget becomes law, the GOP will be responsible for killing programs like this blog is talking about. College kids will have to spend double on the interest on their loans, Medicare would be turned back to the states (which are already bleeding red ink) and Social Security and many other programs that are bought and payed for by taxpayers will be curtailed or eliminated. BUT, the Greedy One-Percenters will never make the wealthy pay their fair share because they like it rigged the way it is. They have even seen to it that their Supreme Court lapdogs have declared that corporations are people with the right to donate obscene amounts individually or as a PAC to GOP campaigns anonymously. I'll believe corporations are people with the same rights as I have when I see many of them jailed for what they have done to our economy, including the big banks and Wall Street speculators. The proper changes to regulate these millionaires and billionaires and to save our economy from a future repeat of what they have done will only come if we re-elect President Obama and give him a Democratic House and Senate.
