Speaking in San Francisco Rick Perry equates Homosexuality with Alcoholism

I love this photo of Rick (the dimwit) Perry at the Iowa State Fair two years ago. I'm thinking he would make a lousy cocksucker. Frankly, he doesn't understand a lot of stuff, but that rarely stops him from sharing his ignorant notions. Now Perry explains that a person's sexual orientation is like substance abuse. Like alcoholism inparticular, something Perry does have some first hand experience with.

Perry equates homosexuality, alcoholism
By Steve Benen
The moderator at the Commonwealth Club of California asked [Texas Gov. Rick Perry] if he considered homosexuality to be a disorder, according to an article in the San Francisco Chronicle.
“Whether or not you feel compelled to follow a particular lifestyle or not, you have the ability to decide not to do that,” Perry allegedly said. “I may have the genetic coding that I’m inclined to be an alcoholic, but I have the desire not to do that, and I look at the homosexual issue the same way.”
Perry, of course, helps lead the Texas Republican Party, which just last weekend formally endorsed the notion that “reparative therapy” is an effective way to turn gay people straight through counseling. The state GOP endorsed its “legitimacy and efficacy” for “patients seeking healing and wholeness from their homosexual lifestyle.”
Asked yesterday whether he believes in “reparative therapy,” the Republican governor said he does not know whether the practice works. (It doesn’t.)
Perry along with Texas Republicans buy into this nonsense treatment being promoted by charlatans and hucksters. My dad was an alcoholic, and he was also a physician who specialized in Addictionology. Unlike “reparative therapy,” there are treatments for alcoholism that can work. Alcoholism is difficult to treat successfully, with most alcoholics going through treatment several times before achieving success. “Reparative therapy” often takes a religious approach of trying to "Pray the Gay away" and is completely ineffective.

Governor Perry, a better comparison for a person's sexual preference might be whether a person is born left or right handed.

  • I am a registered Republican. Gay and proud but this clown is one of those worthless Politicians I find on both sides. I would be willing to try a King and Queen Monarchy next time around. I am not happy with any Politician theses day from any PARTY. By the way he certainly is not the only one in the party with no brain. I have n problem with an opinion but i do have a problem with totally ignorant people in high places, actually anywhere.

  • Speaking of addiction...
I know a lot of gay men who are addicted to being gay like it is a substance abuse. Like men who are addicted to unprotected bareback sex to the point where they take HIV prevention pills six times a day. The same goes to straight men who are addicted to being the perfect married rich man. I know this is different, but the point is that people find some form of acceptance to be high priority, like being popular in high school to the point of addiction.

My only addition is coffee. I fucking love it.
