In just a few words, this sums up how we become who we are. The obvious genetic make-up is what we are born with and the rest is environment and nourishment. Gay men have traditionally had a poor environment in heterosexual society. Then too, we have been fed a diet of self-loathing if we buy into the stereotypes and the limits put on us by society.
Just one observation about how one generation of gay men perceives the one that preceded it: Today, younger gay guys seldom know how it was for those of us who came of age in the late 50s and early 60s. They are surprised to hear that gay sexual acts were unlawful at one time in many states. They are surprised to hear that homosexuality was considered a psychological disorder that needed agressive treatment. Some put down older gay men because they have been reluctant to come out to their families and communities.
What have been your observations over the years?
