Brian and I went to the State Fair of Texas yesterday. For those of you not familiar with the Texas State Fair, there is a contest every year to pick the winner of the newest fried food creations. We have had fried Twinkies, fried bubblegum, fried Snickers, fried Coke, fried Margaritas, fried PB&J, fried butter.
The winner this year was the fried Cuban Roll which actually just resembled an egg roll but filled with pulled pork, Swiss cheese and ham. It was very good and the sauce was delicious. Brian was determined to try the fried Nutella which didn't win an award but was nonetheless a Fair favorite. Every we walked by the booth there was at least a 45 minute line of people waiting to sample the treat. Finally we were near the end of the day and he decided to get in line while I went to the DAR house to get cheap water ($1.00 versus the $3.50 everyone else was charging).
I found some water and him in a line which took us about 40 minutes from the time I got there to actually get to the order window. We got to the front and looking at the 40 coupons we still had to use Brian decided to order the fried Jambalaya as well. We took our tasty treats and found an empty spot at the table. He of course started to attacked the fried Nutella which was the purpose of standing in line, 60 minutes for him. We had the sense all day to split each of foods we sampled. I took a bite out of the friend Jambalaya and let out an audible gasp. He looked surprised and asked if it was good. It was not only good it was the best thing we tried all day. It actually won last year in one of the categories. And by far it was the best.
Here was our menu for the day: We each had a foot long corny dog and then we split fried turkey dinner, fried Millionaire Pie (our 2nd favorite), fried spinach bites, fried Nutella, fried Jambalaya, fried Cuban roll, fried Jalapeno corndog shrimp and finished the coupons by each having a nut covered ice cream bar.
I guess I have to walk a couple of extra miles tomorrow morning in penance but it was a great afternoon. And we got to see the new Big Tex. Last year Big Tex the fair mascot burst into flames during the last week of the fair.
My roommate went this year and said the new fried meatloaf was great.
Sad to see the departure of a longtime State Fair favorite, the bird show, which ended this year after a 25-year run.
What did you think of the new Big Tex? Photos I've seen were kind of disappointing.
