Stores Opening On Thanksgiving Day

What is your opinion of stores being open on Thanksgiving Day? I see no reason for them to open. It all comes down to the almighty dollar. It is the people that work in the stores that will not be able to spend time with family and friends. I am sure the people that made the decision to open will not be working. They will be enjoying the Holiday. What really made my blood boil, was a Walmart ad on TV. About how much you can save on your Thanksgiving Dinner by shopping at Walmart. I am sure the people that work in the store won't be enjoying a Thanksgiving meal.
I have made the decision, to not shop in any store that will be open on a Holiday. Instead I will shop in the store that choose to close so their employees can enjoy the Holiday with family and friends.

  • I won't be shopping at the malls on Thanksgiving or the day after or the day after that. Not going shopping in the malls that next week either or the week after that. Haven't been in a mall in years, don't miss them. Haven't participated in the Christmas consumer orgy for years and don't miss it. My ex and I had beautifully wrapped empty boxes under the tree for 12 of the 17 years we were together. We bought what we wanted when it was on sale and certainly didn't buy crap we didn't need with money we didn't have.

I am somewhat puzzled as to what to do this year however. Have a new bf and while we both share the same feelings about religion we haven't had the gifting discussion yet as we have only just finished 2 months of dating and now moved on to the bf stage. I like buying at yard/garage/estate sales but he is very fond of $300 shoes and $150 shirts. This is the one area where we do have a disparity in our personal philosophies. I may punt and take him to NOLA for Christmas or Galveston Island.

I don't castigate stores for greed. That is kinda like saying religious people shouldn't pray. Stores are about commerce. Some stores do 40% of their business in December and 25% of their profits. They wouldn't open if people weren't planning on showing up.

  • We accept it! We accept everything these days and why is that? We don't like it, never have yet we just roll our eyes and say it is what it is. Sounds more like the frogs in the water then people with a voice. We think that it is Ok that workers HAVE to work on holidays so we can have a little more convenience? Why? We watch reality shows and think they are great but never once think what happened to the actors, writers and other workers associated with good quality shows? Ever wonder what it takes to produce a reality show? So we allow all of this to happen and just shrug our shoulders and say "not my problem". Well it is not going to get any better with an attitude of acceptance. I for one think it is outrageous that the only real non religious family holiday we have left is being taken from us by greed. I am going to enjoy my friends and family and give thanks that none of them are put in a position to have to work this holiday in order to put food on the table like so many others have. If you have not seen the movie"12 years a slave" you should all go and see it and realize why we need to fight for what is right and ours.

  • my hours at a major retail chain are usually 6am to 2pm until this year we have never been open on Thanksgiving.
Now on Thanksgiving I have to go in at 9pm and work until 7am. So happy F---ing Thanksgiving America I get to go to dinner with family and friends for a whole 2 hours so I can rush off to work. I'm not a happy camper.

  • When I was a waiter I loved working on Christmas, Thanksgiving and especially New Years. NYE is a great day for making money. Its nice to be with family but after 5 hours thats about enough for me. How long can I sit there staring at my sisters husband or pretending to like the football game on tv? lol ;)

  • There have always been some businesses open on Thanksgiving. I'm in a job that has always had workers on the holiday. Grocery stores and convenience stores have been open on the holiday for many years. It sucks, but yeah, people do have to work on holidays. Even Christmas.

So I don't think a few retailers being open is that big of deal. If you think shopping would ruin your holiday, don't go.

  • So lets make Thanksgiving a shopping day instead of a holiday.

I will not be shopping on Thanksgiving Day.

  • I have the day off. I feel for those that are forced to work. I will not be shopping to show them my support. I hope there are many that feel as I do. If the CEO decides to open the stores out of greed, then the CEO should be at his desk also!!!

  • I agree 100%. It's getting SO obvious that the corporations own us and can keep people so poor that they are happy to earn a little more money by giving up their family tradition of Thanksgiving which is, btw, the least commercialized holiday due to why it was founded in the first place. Here is a cartoon that may be a bit funny, but it really portends a sad future for this holiday if people can't control their greed, beginning with the banks and corporations responsible for economic crises and ruining the middle class.
