I AM NOT A PROUD AMERICAN

As a little boy my mother always told me what to say if anyone asked me what I was. The answer was to be "I AM AN AMERICAN". I never in a million years thought that today I would say, I am not a proud American. I hope the people who voted for that gross pig and poor excuse for a man are happy with their decision (I'm sure right at this moment they are), but like what happened in England you can't change your minds. You're stuck with him and so are the rest of us. It is not a good day for America and come January you will realize that.

  • I was not surprised though I was certainly disappointed by the election. I voted for Hillary, very, very, very reluctantly. Her presidency would have been filled with obstruction, inquiries, whiffs of scandal and Bill probably grabbing headlines for his misbehavior.

But I've been an out, proud gay man since we were still considered a mental health disease. Adversity builds strength and we are definitely in for some adversity. But we survived almost 2 terms of Nixon, we ourselves survived AIDS despite no help from Reagan, our language is still intact despite 2 terms of Bush Jr. We will survive 4 years of Drumpf and be stronger for it.

My best friend, an African-American woman, flew in for the elections. We were both despondent the next day but the day after that we went to the Drumpf demonstration at Dealy Plaza. It was heartening to see so many young people, people who were the same age when Elise and I were first demonstrating for civil rights, gay rights, women's rights, criminal justice reform. There were also some people our age, whole families. It made both of us feel better that we were not alone.

  • Sometimes in life we need to get our ass kicked in order to realize we have not been giving our best effort. I for one think that as bas as the next two years could be we can take it as a wake up call and get back up off the floor and start getting back into the fight. We did it in the 60's/70's, we did it again in the 80's and now we need to do it again. The foxes have the keys to the chicken coup and nothing we can do about that. We can either sit back and complain and wish for something better or we can go to work fixing what needs to be fixed. There are lots of opportunities to help and participate and we have several demonstrations and marches coming down the pike that we can use people to participate in. Time for progressives to grow some big balls and a backbone.

  • Marc, I saw it before election day and after the movie Michael Moore Skped with us live. I enjoyed the movie and the conversation with Moore.

  • As it says in my profile, I really do have some close friends here @DD. A number are from all over the world. I have received some beautiful and touching notes from them during this week. To one who said I should feel myself held tightly in his arms. I wrote:
    --------------------
Thank you (his name). I need your tight hugs more than you know. I’m grateful that we find each other fine looking. But I am more than honored that you would even write to a shameful American. I am not like the uneducated white men and codependent white women of this country, but they are fellow citizens so I must be as well. Along with England, there must be something in the English Language that weakens brain cells. I have extended family in Brazil. Perhaps I should start to learn Portuguese.
A kiss while still within your hug.
    Best,
    --------------------
Guys out there in DD Land… I’m not having an easy time with this one.

  • I am not a happy, proud American either! To those who voted for Donald Trump, a dictator, mysoginist; racist; undignified; womanizer; tax-evader (because that make him, "smart," so . . . law abiding, hard-working, honest, responsible tax-payers makes us "stupid?); promoter of violence a vulgarity; do you really believe he will create millions of jobs by cutting substantial taxes & providing numerous benefits to the 1% billionaires and millionaires? --Not in your wildest dreams! Do you believe the privatization of Social Security will benefit the millions of elderly citizens who have worked all their lives to earn this rightful benefit? Do you believe revoking the Climate Control agreement is a wise idea? That Trump and his republican advisers will act wisely and prudently in dealing with the unruly Middle East tumultuous and increasing political unrest and in dealing with the constant and increasing threat of ISIS (created and promoted by Hillary Clinton, according to DT . . . how ludicrous!) and other terrorist groups? That it is constitutional two of Trump's children will be part of his staff? (this is not Cuba or Russia; this is the USA!); that just because you voted for DT you will become affluent over night and will be playing gulf in FL, rubbing elbows with the rich and famous? That appointing extremist right Judges to the Supreme Court will promote civil; elderly, gay; women; minority rights? If you believe in all these delusions, good luck to you, and damn you for dragging the entire country into a social; financial and moral pitfall. Donald Trump was not elected by the hard-working; well-educated; elite members of society; his demagogy; violent and outraged rhetoric appealed to the vast, uneducated masses. Sadly and most unfortunately for our country, it did work and now we have a clown that will transform the most respectable institutions of the USA, the White House into the most absurd circus. We will be the laughing matter of the entire international community! Sad, sad historical period in America.

  • Agree with aliencubby on this point. I hope Trump stays healthy for four years because Mike Pence is much scarier. As for Trump, so far hes saying the right things, even that parts of Obamacare are worth saving. Politically Trump is nowhere near as far right as most of the Republican Congress so it will be interesting to see how long it takes for him to be at war with his own party. I have no idea where the Dems go from here. Except for Elizabeth Warren, who is 67, there are no obvious stars/leaders on the horizon. Time for the next generation to step up.

  • To be fair, Drumpf, despite all his inherent anti-science, misogynistic and racist rhetoric, seems to be relatively leaning towards the middle, when it comes to actual politics. And he's a shrewd businessman, and knows how to get his Brand Trump talked about, and even celebrated. He is a general mess, has zero experience in politics, and is, as a person, disgusting - certainly not a role model for youngsters - but now that he's been democratically elected, he deserves a chance - He might not be a good president, but he might not be as big a disaster as we'd expect him to be.

What you should be REALLY concerned about, are Mike Pence, who's bringing in all sorts of dangerous far-right religious extremists into the cabinet - people who wouldn't think twice before bringing in their 12th century ideologies into law, while demolishing individual rights. I mean, science-denying Ben pyramids-are-silos Carson for education? Guiliani or Christie for Attorney General? Or Sarah Palin for anything at all? I get that these allegedly are just a prospective list, but damn - that's a scary thought. Not to mention the NOM laying out a nation-wide policy for repealing any LGBT rights..

And of course, the now-openly hateful mobs, who have been whipped up into a frenzy of brazen bigotry, hate, xenophobia, racism and general deplorability, who now feel vindicated by Trump's victory. We've already seen open KKK marches, Ben Carson

There are MUCH worse demons than Drumpf. He's just the easier target, while the real evil lurks in the background, waiting to come out.

    fenwaydav 11/10/2016 03:32 PM
  • didnt vote for him but the rest of you need to stop being so dramatic. the world hasnt ended. he may be a better president than anyone thought. as far as republicans go he has a history of being more liberal than the clintons. then again he may be another obama and accomplish nothing and do a terrible job. either way if you trully feel passionate about this country you should start doing your part in making a differance. participate in the politics more than every 4 years. start making a differance now. and educate yourself and those around you.

  • I am not for one moment going to give Trump anything! He is in bed with neo-Nazis, white racists and Russians so the idea that he says something like I am for all Americans only makes me be even more on my guard. The issue is not who won or who didn't win. the real 800 pound gorilla in the country is the 47% of eligible voters who felt it just wasn't worth their effort to vote. These people are the problem and we need to address it. You can't have a democracy if only half of the people participate. I wonder what goes through the mind of an American that doesn't vote? He doesn't mind when someone else fights for his country or stands up to protect his rights he even applauds it and says yep that is my countryman. He enjoys the fruits of the people who built this country, enjoys the freedoms of living here and waves the flag and stands for the national anthem. But what happens when America asks that he go and vote? What hole does he crawl into? What excuse does he cling to? Whatever it is we need to look at that guy and see if he is me?

  • Man, it's been a VERY ROUGH last 24 hours, but at this point all we can do is mourn the loss, lick our wounds, and give Trump the benefit of the doubt until he fucks up. What choice do we have, really? At least he was sounding the right note after the election (saying he wants to be the president of all Americans, not something you'd seriously hear from most GOP politicians these days). Maybe he is politically naive enough to actually mean it. I think we, meaning the gay community, will likely come out of it without *too* much damage. Trump is quite likely the most pro-gay Republican president in history. (That isn't saying much, but it's at least *something*.) And I think that the gay marriage ruling by the Supreme Court would be all but impossible to overturn. (Who would have standing to challenge it?)

I think the big test of Trump's presidency will be whether he can persuade the hateful, dysfunctional, do-nothing GOP Congress, which doesn't like him much, to do anything to help the American people. First test up, most likely: Trump has pledged to repeal and replace Obamacare. Getting Congress to repeal it is no problem, considering the House votes to do that about once a week. But getting the Republicans on Capital Hill to replace it with something meaningful would be nothing short of a miracle. Millions of the working poor (including my sister, who has a chronic, incurable disease) had health insurance for the first time in their lives because of Obamacare. Many of those same lower-class, under-educated white Americans who could have benefited from Obamacare voted for Trump. This will likely be the first BIG test of Trump's leadership ability, and he'd better do the right thing and not throw them under the bus.

And just remember, it could be a helluva lot worse. If things had gone a little differently in the GOP primaries, we could be staring at president-elect Ted Cruz. And if you think Trump is scary, Cruz would be absolutely TERRIFYING!!!!!!

  • Dave, we might not see it in our lifetime, but the next generation will. When whites become the minority, they will know how it feels when the shoe is on the other foot. They will be the ones to pay the price for their angry white parents.

  • Very well put Dave, and we all need to remember that those who put him in office own all of it. It is upon us now to be diligent and aware.
