If you're on a computer/tablet, the Friends button on the menu allows you to see your friends and favorites lists. On mobile it's the star button on the bottom bar.
When looking at the lists, online users display a green dot on their top left corner. Everyone with the green dot is online right now. I could try adding the word "online" after the dot, in case it's more helpful.
