my passion sugar gliders

i see alot of people selling sugar gliders for 300 to 400 dollars, they sometimes come with a years supply of food(pellets) first off sugar gliders shouldnt be fed pellets studies have showbn that pellets can cause liver problems, in the wild they eat insects, nectar, soft fruits, and tree sap, also buying a years supply of pellet is pointless they lose their nutritional value after 90 days. sugar gliders should be fed a nectar replacement like bml, thats what i feed along with fruits, veggies and meal worms, if you dont have the time to get out the blender once a month and make a months worth then you shouldnt have one.
sugar gliders bond closely to their humans mine come to the front of the cage in the evening to greet me they climb up my arms and run around also one sugar glider can become depressed by itself, they are colony animals and should be kept in pairs, if you dont have time to make up food once a month im pretty sure you cant provide enough time to play and interact with one.
sugar gliders should never be bought at the mall i have seen alot of people that have bought them from there and they were given the wrong info.
sugar gliders do need a wheel no a small hamster wheel they need at least a medium wheel, the best wheels can be googles "sugar glider wheels" there are a few .
another thing is they need a large cage like 30 inches by 36 inches by 20 inches deep, as they like to jump and play and climb and the cage should have plenty of toys to play with, like for example a ball pit, a small container with pom poms in it they like to dig and play in it (also you can put treats for them to forage for)
look at your sugar gliders coat, is it split and has cracks in it? then there is sometime going on, usually diet related (ie pellets)
the reason i am doing this post is i have adopted to sugar glider from different people, the first onewas in a small cage and didnt have any toys nor a wheel and was fed solely pellets, she looked horrible her fur was split and cracked, and she had not been handled and the girl told me she was very wild, i have had her a month and spent time with her and now she will come to me and is not bothered when i put my hands in the cage. the second one had a small wheel she couldnt really get in to run and no toys, and was fed pellets the reason both were rehomed was the first one the lady didnt know how to properly care for it she was given bad info, the second one they werent spending time with her and she didnt have any toys. and they were also feeding pellets.
there are several staple diets out their on the internet where you can choose the diet you want to feed and usually the recipes make up a months worth and you freeze it , sugar gliders also require a calcium and vitamin supplement, the staple diets call for specific ones you can usually get them at petsmart or online.
before getting a glider please take these things into consideration and know they are very diet specific, pellets are bad if you dont have the time to make a staple diet, provide a large cage, and have 2 gliders atleast then reconsider getting one , also if you dont have time to bond with them they wont be happy .
i know a nice person from HAG(help a Glider) post some details on here from time to time if you need help get in contact with this person or me.
also do some research by looking at the web sites sugarglider.com and glider central.
an also if you take your glider to a vet and they recommend feeding pellets find another vet there is a good vet on ft bragg rd, that will give you info on the required staple diets
before you buy a sugar glider ask to see it first(i did not)look at its eyes, they should be clear and shiny, look at its coat there should not be splits and cracks in it and it should be smooth and soft, alos look at its tail it should be fluffy with no hair missing, also look at it walk or run around the cage look for signs of hind leg paralysis. also a single sugar glider can become depressed and begin self mutilation.
please before you buy a sugar glider take all this into account and determine if a pair of gliders are for you.

  • Boy, with a fruit and nectar diet, I'll bet they're messy.

BTW, I have birds, so I'm used to messy pets :)

  • If you have a photo of a Sugar Glider, I would like to see it. I may have seen one in the past, but had no idea that is what I was looking at.
