Poll: Would you pay $50 to stream an opening day movie at home?

Saw this idea and thought it was pretty neat.
Sean Parker, the founder of Napster, is working on technology to stream opening day movies to your home. You buy a box for $150, like AppleTV, then you pay $50 to stream a new release movie from opening day. you get to watch the movie for 48 hours, and you also get 2 tickets to see the movie at theaters.

I think its kind of a neat idea. And once the technology is out there I believe it will get much cheaper.

  • $50 a movie? Reasonable enough... Shady minds might do two showings Fri and Sat for instance and charge two sets of friends to "split costs" and come out ahead...

But what else does it do? For the $150 device, it'd be a waste of space if it can't do other things, like maybe connect to Netflix/Hulu, etc...

  • I'm sure some people would go for it, but I think I'd pass. $50 is too stout to watch a movie at home. I don't like to re-watch most movies, so the free theater tickets would be redundant for me :)

And as Alien and Fur pointed out, some movies just need to be seen on the big screen.

BTW, I really enjoyed Fury Road on TV. It had enough of a personal element to it that a big screen wasn't a MUST. But that said, I imagine it would have been even better on a big screen.

  • Despite all the annoying teenagers, talkative couples, phone-using people, latecomers and worst of all, screamy kids, the appeal of the movie theaters is the big screen and immersive sound. Even though I have the Blu-Ray DVDs, I can't even imagine being able to enjoy movies like Mad Max:Fury Road or Gravity or Interstellar on my 42" LED TV - at least not as much as I enjoyed them on an IMAX screen. The best part about the big screen movie experience? The sounds are usually loud enough to drown out the annoying people.
Whenever I'm at a movie with screaming kids in the audience though - I keep silently hoping there's some really explicit violent or sexually charged scene on the screen, so the irresponsible parents will get really uncomfortable and walk out.
    Doesn't happen often though =(

  • If I was at your place trying to watch a movie, it isn't the size of your TV I would be interested in, and I'd make sure you didn't see much of the movie either.

  • I agree with you furball, seeing it on the big screen is the big experience.
That being said, I have to say I Loathe going to the movie theater. 4 out of the last 6 times I went to the movies there was someone in the audience on their phone, texting, or talking, or being distracting.
One time there was a row of teenagers taking selfies and snap chatting during the movies, ugh. When you're OCD like me its awful lol. I think being able to stream at home, have some friends each chip in $10 and bring a snack, split a pizza, is nice.

  • It's a cool idea; two tickets for imax and 3d are comparable, but, for me, seeing a movie for the first time on the big screen is part of the event. The stylings of movies like The Revenant and The Hateful Eight would come across dull on our little TV. But!... when you get it set up at your house, I'll gladly come over with some spirits in hand and enjoy. :)
