Omg. Doesnt get more in your face than that lol. Naturally Tinder and Grindr have started legal proceedings for it to be removed. Do you think it should be taken down?
Good point, Bearlyy, and the question then is whether this billboard libels Tinder and Grindr. You could make a case either way and it's a tough call. But I'd say no on the basis that these are explicit sex hookup sites, aren't they? Random sex can and does transmit STDs, and something can't be libelous if it's true.
I think your hypothetical car ad would be OK, too, because it's not specific enough to be libelous. However, carmakers have DEEP pockets, so if they really got exercised about it, they'd likely get their way.
And despite circular arguments to the contrary, guns DO kill people, so I don't think there would be a problem attacking gun manufacturers either, but the NRA has tons of money and is aggressive in taking legal action, so you could count on being sued!!! But if whoever took out the gun ad, or for that matter any of these real or proposed ads, could afford the legal battle, I think they'd win. Libel isn't an easy case to prove.
Hey Bearlyy, maybe you have a good idea. After what happened in Oregon today, on top of what has been happening over and over again in the country, we SHOULD call people's attention to the companies that are merchants of death in this country. And make no mistake about it, many of the types of guns sold in this country have no other purpose than to kill other people.
We've been working on auto safety in this country for many years. I doubt people realize it, but gun deaths in the U.S. either already have or soon will exceed traffic fatalities. We pay a lot of attention to a lot of other major killers, but we pay none at all to guns.
Using this same logic, why do we pay so much attention to drug deaths? After all, heroin doesn't kill people; people kill themselves by using it.
I don't know much about how Tinder and Grindr operate, but unless they encourage people to behave responsibly, contribute to charities that deal with STDs, etc., they aren't being good corporate citizens and deserve what they get.
No I think it should be left up. I actually think its a pretty good ad and kind of funny in a perverse way. Cant really decide if I have a problem with the ad politically but if I were Tinder or Grindr I would definitely be on my way to court.
