Any advice for traveling on a budget?

I'm looking to relocate to a new city and I've narrowed it down to a few based on what I want career-wise.
But they're all across the country and between the airfare, hotel and car rentals it can get very expensive.
Have any of you traveled on a budget and can give any tips to do so?
I want to travel to see Silicon Valley (Palo Alto, Sunnyvale, etc) , Austin TX and NYC. None of which are cheap places lol.

Any advice and suggestions are really appreciated.
thanks

  • Hey there. Have you checked out the website called " GAY TRAVELLERS NETWORK"? You can sign up for NYC and others. You can send a message to the community and someone will give you some direction in their perspective locales/states/cities.

  • The key to flying is two points:
    (1) buy your ticket on line
    (2) buy your ticket early (the earlier the better)

The second possibility is to use coupons - sometimes these are available on line (e. g., coupons.com) or perhaps you favority restaurant, motels, rental cars.

The third possibility is to use the benefits of any professional association membership you have - e. g., AARP. I use my military benefit which oftentimes gets at least 10% off. As a member of MOAA (Military Officers Association of America) I have had some discounts too. The point is that this requires some research and some time investment.

I learned something about staying in Las Vegas. We stayed in the Three Queens (pricy). We walked the entire strip and even meandered a block or two off of the strip. In doing so we found some motels more in a "reasonable" price range - e. g., Motel 6 and so forth... The point is to think like a person who knows the area you are going to - staying downtown is generally going to cost more than staying in a suburb. Staying in a suburb might cost you 15-minutes driving time but that can easily add up to some cost savings on a room downtown...

Finally, check out the Chamber of Commerce website for an intended destination. They might have some good tips for you, as well.

    Good luck!

  • i don't know how practical it is in your case but i had a friend, retired and fixed income, who traveled EVERYWHERE on amtrak. takes a little longer but they were extremely customer service oriented and eager to please. also, check into megabus. limited routing and mainly eastern usa at this point but if you need to be in their area, you can get fantastic ticket prices by planning ahead.
