  • Why one decade only? I love ALL these decades and have favorites from all of them ... some mentioned some not and few decades that go a bit further back like the Bessie Smith and the Blues from the 20's & 30's and early "swing" bands ... and Scot Joplin before that. as the expression goes, "ITS ALL GOOD" and I hate to limit myself. How about some Schubert from the 1820's? ;) LOL!

  • For me its hard to pick decades because each decade has had its share of great stuff. Individual genres would shine in particular moments that aren't representative of the decade as a whole, and sometimes those golden periods crossed over from one decade to the next. I grew up in the 80's and while particular artists and genres had there moments there was a lot of bad music from that time as well. Not really one to go to decade theme things because while they may play some good songs they'll undoubtedly play some rubbish as well. I have very eclectic musical tastes that span all the decades in question. Good music is good music, regardless of time period or genre.

  • IF YOU ARE AN OVER THE TOP DRAMA QUEEN THE ONLY ERA FOR YOU IS THE BAROQUE PERIOD (1600-1750). THE AGE OF BACH, HANDEL, AND PURCELL!!! MAKE AN ENTERANCE WITH AN ARIA FROM PURCELL'S "KING ARTHUR" AND YOU WILL NOT SOON BE FORGOTTEN! IT WAS THE MOST DRAMATIC, EMOTIONAL, THEATRICAL PERIOD IN HISTORY.

  • The 80s had a plethora of music. Different bands, genres, solo artists. You would be listening to the radio hearing rock, then the next, hearing country, disco, punk.

  • It is rare that truly ‘good music/art’ (inventive, challenging, engaging, universal, and enduring) is created. It does happen though, and we have lifetimes of these soundly historic artifacts. It is even more rare that someone(s) produces a string of ‘hits’ where both the specific artist(s) and their works symbolize their time. Generally, however, those who are present during each period- where each person’s ‘life-moments’ become one with each happening of creative sparks- are long gone. In time ‘future others’ make their own connections with the ‘best of’ music/art that represents their predecessors. These who live in the time yet to come who make the representative connections wonder in fascination what it must have been like to live when the music/art was created. And the answer is that we all see only the brightest flashes of momentary light as we try to live each day... as those who did before us... as those who will follow.

  • No second thoughts.. 60s and 70s for me (EXCEPT DISCO). Actually.. Love me some good ole 50s too.. And some hard rock from the 80s-90s. That's when good music started dying, IMO.

  • it's not a matter of which decade, it's a matter of who i listen to from each decade.
20's=bessie smith, the carter family, robert johnson, compilations of early roots/bluegrass by little known artists
30's=billie holiday, greta keller, russ coumbo
40's=there are so many...right now i'm listening to a lot of dick haymes and helen forrest, frank sinatra, doris day with les brown
50's-sinatra, doris day, johnny mathis, nina simone, johnny cash, ella fitzgerald
60's=same as the 50's w/ the addition of the beatles, stones, janis joplin, jefferson airplane, joni mitchell, judy collins, leonard cohen, kitty wells, hazel and alice, ola belle reed, ralph stanley, bob dylan
70's=same as the 60's but then add disco, sylvester, grace jones, david bowie's dance records produced by nile rodgers, linda ronstadt, hazel dickens solo, alice gerrard solo, stevie wonder
80's=same as the 70's, add luther vandross, michael jackson, cher, marianne faithfull, bruce springsteen
90's=repeat, add shirley manson w/ garbage, jimmy scott
2000's=selected work by all of the above who are still living and recording, antony and the johnsons

  • Have to agree with the Bear. Partial to the 60s, the music of my teens. Motown, the guy groups The Miracles, The Temps, Four Tops. The girl groups: Supremes, Martha and the Vandellas, Marvelettes. The single artists: Marvin Gaye, Mary Wells.

The Atlantic/Stax group: Ray Charles, Aretha, Wilson Pickett, Sam and Dave, Dusty, Solomon Burke. Issac Hayes, Staple Singers, Bonnie and Delaney.

The British Invasion: Dave Clark Five, Beatles, Peter and Gordon, Gerry and the Pacemakers.

    The Folkies: Dylan, Baez etc.

    For bearlyy:

Aretha Arrives: You are my sunshine, and Prove it. Two of my favorite songs by her.

Mary Wells Greatest Hits. there are several versions out there. the woman was so much more than My Guy.

Marvelettes: check out the hunter gets captured by the game, and the day you take one (you gonna have to take the other). they were highly under rated.

Bonnie and Delaney: Soul Shake, great bass line

  • To be honest, I think most everyone is partial to the music of the era they grew up in. For me, that was the 60s and 70s. After that, there is actually a lot of great music being done today -- 2000s and 2010s. And no, I'm not talking about hip-hop, dance music, or pop :)

  • I am torn between the 50's and the 70's. Growing up I played my parent's records so I have a passion for Buddy Holly, Patsy Cline, Joni James, Brenda Lee, Connie Francis, Bobby Vee and the like. But I was a pre-teen and teenager in the 70's and bought every record out there and still have a major fondness for the 70's. The Carpenters, ABBA, Jim Croce, Doobies, Fleetwood Mac, Elton John, James Taylor. For me, REAL music stopped being made by 1990. When rap and hiphop became the new normal, music no longer exsisted.
