Computer brands you love or hate?

Is there a brand of computer you love or really hate? My old laptop is dying and I'm in the market for a new one. I do research online and I get so confused. One place says HP is great, another says they're terrible. Another one loves Dell and another one hates them. Etc.

Is there a brand of computer you've had great luck with, or bad luck with? Do you even care?
And no I'm not getting a Mac. They're beautiful but way too expensive.

  • I don't like Toshiba and Compaq laptops. I like my HP desktop. My Gateway is a "dinosaur."

  • Hey Marc,

My HP desk top is seven years old and runs like I bought it yesterday. My laptop, also HP is 3 years old, never had a problem with it either. Having the right software keeps them healthy and free of any bugs. I have two printers, one is an older HP purchased at the same as my desk top that works like a top. My lap top wireless HP printer works like a dream. I'd do Commercials for HP products if asked, in my opinion HP has developed some great products. And your right about China...my research tells me that there are three major companies in China who manufacture all computers under different brands... If you've had a bad history with one, then change to something different, there enough out there...Good luck with your search

  • Personally, I'd go with Dells. I've had two Dells over the past 8 years, and have worked fine without any major glitches. Which is not to say they're perfect.. I've had my share of tiny issues, which I've been able to solve myself (being a geek helps.lol). If you're living in a big city, their service personnel come over to your place and sometimes even replace the faulty component, as long as you're under their replacement warranty. Even otherwise, despite rough use, my Dells have worked fine, as have the ones I've bought for my family.
Personally, I'd stick to Windows (preferentially, Win 7) over Macs any day. Macs are fine for your average user, and maybe for designers, but Windows or Linux machines are more worth the price, with far better features and less walled-garden proprietary nonsense to deal with.
As for malware.. They can be avoided using the simplest of common sense measures. Not a big deal at all. I've used Windows, Macs and Linux. For sheer comfort and simple geeking out, gaming and economical computing, I love my Windows (not so sure I'm excited about Win 8 though - Win 7 serves me just fine)

  • DELL! I have had mine for over four years now and it has been all over with me in my back pack and works like a champ. One issue I do have is a bad back light now and then. It is the sort of computer you can take with you and not have to worry about it just like the Everyready bunny.

  • The only problem with getting a new PC is that it comes with Windows 8. I suggest that you try Win 8 before deciding on a pc.
I converted to iMac about 3 years ago and will never go back to a pc. The iMac comes with most of the software you need. Also Apple does not change the way it's system operates between operating system upgrades. Check out the Apple Mac Minnie.
You can get a cheap pc, and you have a cheap pc. Get a moderately priced Apple and you have a good computer

  • I'm not that concerned about viruses as I blow my computers away and reformat them every 3 months or so to completely clean them out.

  • Hey Marc,
I just bought a new ASUS Notebook and I love it. I also did research on line and I took that information to the store with me. The salesman who helped me was very knowledgeable about each brand I looked at, and when I brought up some of the issues the brand had, he recognized them and also offered information on the manufactures corrections to the latest models. So, go to your local computer store armed with knowledge about each brand. See if the latest models have made the corrections to those problems listed on line. I would also advise you to get any and all warranties that are available to you via the manufacturer or the store. Best of luck.

  • When I needed a new computer I had my nephew (who is a computer nerd) advise me. I went with HP and it seems to do everything my limited computer skills needs and does it quite well.

  • OK, don't buy a Mac, but you are missing out on several advantages such as the extremely low incidence of virual invasion, etc. I have always used Macs in design work and I would think for the DD site here it would have graphic advantages.

  • Dells in the past have had an issue with hard drive failures. Don't know if they've improved that, but it's enough for me to steer clear. I've had an HP laptop for 5 years with no problems.

  • Marc,
I've had an HP desktop for over 15 years and it has had very minor repairs. I added a new hard drive to quadruple the amount of memory. Other than that it has been a faithful machine and I continue to use it as a secondary computer. I also have several HP digital cameras that continue to work like troopers and the photoraphs are excellent. I know that some people do not care for HP at all, but I have been more than pleased with their products. One certainly hears pros and cons rearding all makes of computer. I think you need to decide what features you want and determine what you are going to use the computer for. Once you have done that, you can start looking at all the brands to see which on offers what you want for the best amount of money. Good Luck! It's always a difficult decision because there are so many brands that offer all sorts of great features.

  • Hp and Dell are the best. They do everything a mac can and maybe even better. Just make sure you get antivirus software because they are prone to infection. These computers also last a very long time with great care and maintenance.

  • Or does it even matter? Are they all made in the same factories in China with different labels on them?
