Actually, even burgers are OK in moderation. I've seen nutritionists and health experts say it's OK to eat one in a pinch, but it's what you do with it. The recommendation I recall: Go for a single patty, no cheese or bacon, use mustard instead of the high-cal mayo/ranch toppings, and just go for half the bun. But who wants to eat one that way, right? :)
Marc, thanks for posting this! It's very inspirational and the dramatic change in weight and health by Phil the trucker is amazing. The most important advice offered by Joe Cross is to check with your doctor before embarking on such a radical dietary change, and only do it under medical supervision.
Kale is verboten for people who are susceptible to blood clots, strokes, pulmonary embolism and heart attacks. So, proceed with caution and get cleared by your doc first!
A year ago, I thought about buying a juicer, so I researched the reviews on Amazon. I was all set to buy the top rated Breville machine, until I read a review from a diabetic customer. He raved about the quality of it and he loved everything about it. He reluctantly returned it, even though there was technically nothing wrong with it. He was used to eating whole fruits and vegetables, raw or steamed and that helped him control his blood sugar. When he juiced the same fruits and vegetables and drank a few glasses, his sugar skyrocketed!
It turns out, the juicer removed all the dietetically necessary pulp (fiber), which slows down the absorption of carbohydrates. So, again, check with your doctor!
This reminds me of another movie, "Super Size Me". Also good. Everyone knows that Burger Thing, Mickey D's, Wendy's, KFC, and the like are poisonous.
I think it comes back to what medical pro's, nutritionists and our Mom's have always said: EAT YOUR VEGGIES! (Not necessarily juiced.) Cook at home, and for meat use fresh fish or very lean beef and poultry, sparingly.
Yes, kale is a good cautionary example. It's a prime source of Vitamin K, which is a natural coagulant. And people with certain health conditions shouldn't touch it. Just a warning to have some knowledge about what you're doing :)
This is the Mean Green Juice recipe from the film
1 Bunch of Kale
4 Stalks of Celery
1 Cucumber
2 Granny Smith Apples
1/2 a lemon
ginger root
I went out to Whole Foods and got the juice and it was pretty good. Except I didn't like the Ginger, next time I'll leave that out. But to be honest after I was done with it I wanted another. I want to get a juicer now.

Moderation is the key.
