Rhode Island becomes the 10th state to legalize same-sex marriage. RI trailed the other New England states because of the strong influence of the Catholic Church there, but lawmakers finally overcame that to do the right thing.
We may be starting to run out of states, though. The story notes that Minnesota, Delaware and Illinois are moving toward marriage rights, and the New Jersey Legislature is trying to override the veto by Gov. Christie. CA, of course, is awaiting word from the Supreme Court. And I know that New Mexico is a state that does not expressly forbid same-sex marriage. After that, we run into the state constitutional amendments, and getting past those is going to be a VERY slow go. The Supreme Court is going to have to intervene eventually, but no telling how long that will be.
