I don't take a fatalistic view. The marathon, a jewel of Boston, that Bostonians embrace and celebrate and the rest of us watch in admiration and joy, is far from institution ruined. There are many images, such as the one on the SI cover, that will become iconic of the day. What stands out for me is the video footage following the blast of the Bostonians and others that ran towards the epicenter of the blast to help. For me, those images are more indicative of the type of society that we are. Yeah, there are shitty people doing shitty things, but it's not the nature of Bostonians to sit and quake. Given the city's history, the only quaking that will be felt with be the multitudes that line the streets next year to cheer on the crowds and celebrate the joy of the moment. Tom Friedman, in yesterday's Times, wrote a nice piece called "Bring On The Next Boston Marathon": http://www.nytimes.com/2013/04/17/opinion/friedma … ef=opinion
Who gives a rats ass whether the photo is photshopped or not. SI is known for doing that a lot. The purpose of the cover was to bring attention to what happened. That runner was knock over by the blast and the police rushed in with guns drawn. Maybe not exactly like the picture shows, but that's a minor detail. The 73 year old runner got up and finished the race (with assistance). What's even more shameful about this, is that you both resort to name calling. bearub and ElephantNtheRoom, you should both be ashamed of yourselves.
I apologize to you Mr. ElephantNtheCLOSET
