FBI drops charges against Paul Curtis

Given that Top4Hole blogged about not rushing to judgment on the alleged Boston Bombers, I found it surprising at the quick turn around by the FBI and the drop of charges against Paul Curtis, who had allegedly sent ricin-laced letters to President Obama and other elected officials. You just never know.

It is a serious crime. I don't want to diminish the seriousness of how an individual's life is altered when accused of a crime resulting from shoddy investigative work.

However, reading the article about this in the WP today made me think about a true confederacy of dunces. It turns out that Paul Curtis and the FBI's new person of interest concerning the ricin, James Dutschke, have a history of bad blood running between the two. Curtis initially attracted interest in his online rants and documented conspiracy theories; Dutschke has been arrested for child molestation and indecent exposure amongst other choice crimes. They both sound like swell guys.

The article link below has been updated from an earlier version and one of my favorite lines was unfortunately edited out: when Curtis was first told the charges of mailing ricin-laced envelops, he thought, "I don't even eat rice". Dutshke is now speculating that Curtis is trying to set him up for a past fight. "Dutschke acknowledged his conflict with Curtis and told the Associated Press that their last contact was in 2010, when Dutschke threatened to sue Curtis for saying that he was a member of Mensa, a group for people with high IQs."

I know, I get real upset when people accuse me of being smart. LOL Smartass, yes; smart, no. Who knows, maybe in the conspiracy world Mensa is seen as a threat?

  • I think that these agencies want to release names too quickly!!! They feel that the public wants to know. I would rather know that they have caught the person or persons involved in any situation without a doubt that they r guilty. The reporters and the pc and sites that do nothing but probe things can b a hazard to a lot... There r too many individuals in prisons for crimes they have not committed.. I say find out all the facts before releasing any names!!!

  • no, no offense. i just honestly couldn't tell what you were trying to convey. i agree with all you've said in your reply. apparently, both of those guys need a swift kick in the ass. dumb and dumber is an apt description...maybe that's why the one took offense at being libelled as a mensa member.

  • Hey Rae, like most my blogs here, it has no point. I'm not upset that Curtis was exonerated. In fact, I'm glad for him. It has to be a scary experience to be wrongfully accused, and I thought I made that point, which obviously I did not. I was trying to thread the line in not making light of the crime and, too, those wrongfully accused of the crime. The point of the post--if there is one-- was the humor in the two men that were/are the center of the investigation. Reading the WP article it came across as Dumb and Dumber and these two men's shenanigans involving each other made me chuckle. Sorry if you took offense.

  • i'm not sure what point you're making. are you annoyed because they exonerated the guy? the news was reporting last week that they suspected that the guy had been set up so i'm glad they released him if that's the case.
